Hi.
Can somebody tell me what Dolby Digital EX is ?

Is this receiver compatible with 'normal' Dolby Digital ?

My setup would be :
- Professional digital audio interface supports 24-bit S/PDIF Out
NVIDIA SoundStorm with real-time Dolby Digital 5.1 encoder on ABIT NF7-S 2.0
-Panasonic SA-XR55S

-4x100W Techics speakers + 1 centre
-1 SPDIF optical cable

I don't know if this setup is going to work ... can you help me???

DD-EX is a 6.1 format where the 6th channel is matrixed into the left and right side surround channels and extracted on playback. If the receiver supports DD-EX it will also support Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1.

You should be able to use the s/pdif output of the SoundStorm to connect to the receiver. There should be a setting for the soundcard that allows you to send the digital signal untouched to the receiver so that the receiver can decode it. The real-time DD encoder (I think it's actually called DD Live 5.1) will encode analog or PCM signals to DD 5.1 on the fly.

Thank you very much.

So 'Dolby Digital EX' is downward compatible with 'Dolby Digital 5.1' ...

If I were to use the SPDIF output, the codec (Realtek ALC650 ) doesn't matter.

The receiver will be doing the decoding.

DD EX technically is only a 5.1 format, since the rear channel is matrixed. If you have a 7.1 or 6.1 setup, the rear center is extracted to create the rear channel information. In a 5.1 seutp you hear "normal" 5.1, and the rear channel is ignored (nothing is lost).
