Panasonic DVD-S97S DVD Player
Is this still a great DVD player or are there better in the price range? The first article, especially, seems to identify it being an excellent chipset for video. Unsure about sound.
You think its superior to the Pioneer 588 @ $130 or just wasted money?

I can't say enough about how happy I am with mine. I'm upconverting all my movies to 720p (HDMI to DVI- no problems) and the picture is good enough to completely forget about HD-DVD until my Hitachi spits out its' last photon. I'm using the onboard audio DACs for listening to all my music (it sounds better to me than the Pioneer). So far this player is "da bomb".:D

I have the S77S, and I think it's great. I'm not sure what the difference between the S77 and the S97 are. I can't speak for the Panasonic you're referring to, but $130 seems to be a pretty good price for a DVD player.

My only complaint about the S77, is that I swear I see interlacing on some movies, even though both the DVD player and my TV say they are getting a 480p signal. I hope it's just some kind of weird software glitch.

But I'm sure I'll be getting a HD-DVD player before too long, so this one is definitely serving me well in the interim.

This site's home page has reviews and that one is reviewed. I only see it in silver:eek: It doesn't have eject on the remote, a feature I miss:eek:

I was a little stunned as well, but I came to realize that I still had to get off my lazy *** to take out the DVD. Looking forward to the day when apes can learn to be our servants.......

I missed that at first too. But now it doesn't bother me. You have to walk to the DVD player to take the DVD out anyway.

Yes, you do, but I liked being spoiled, ejecting it by remote and ready to pluck it out when I was ready to.:D And, didn't have to fumble in the dark to find the eject button.
It will load by remote so I can start it when seated:D

I was very happy with mine until I put one of my PAL discs in and to my horror it won't play them.

In the Audioholics review it says it supports PAL progressive, a major factor in my purchasing decision.

Not too happy :(

Since I don't have any PAL discs, I skipped that portion of the manual. Maybe there is a setup you need to do to accept the PAL disc?

The manual says it wont play PAL, yet people out there are playing PAL discs.

Maybe newer hardware doesn't play it?

If so, that's crap.

There may be a work around for that player that some remote control code will accomplish. I never experimented with that but you could try a google search for workarounds for DVD players?
