Panasonic AE-900 Zoom Modes

Hi All,

I wondered if anyone has experimented with the Zoom modes on this projector. I am especially interested in the ZOOM2 mode (Page 31 of the Manual) that sounds like it may help reduce the black space on 2.35:1 images.

I have a 100" 16x9 screen and would like to know if this works and what is the best way to access this mode and is it worth it?

Currently I feed the projector 1080i signal via HDMI exclusively - and the ASPECT control does not give me anything other than 16:9 and HFIT which seems not very useful.

Thanks for any input

David.

ps Has anyone seen any technical reviews of the Marantz DV9600 yet - other than the Secrets Benchmark review?

? I'm not sure what you are after. A 2.35:1 film will fit your 2.35:1 screen perfectly. There is NO other screen size it can, or should, ever fit.

If you have an issue with the 'black bars' then get a screen masking system or make a masking system yourself. This is the appropriate and proper way to view the video footage.

This is what 2.35 aspect ratios look like and SHOULD look like on a 16:9 screen...

Hi,

I think you missed the point. The projector does 2.35.1 movies with black top and bottom. 1.85:1 are perfect and fit the 16x9 Screen beautifully.

I wondered if the ZOOM2 would better fit 2.35:1 images on a 16x9 Screen.

Thanks

David

Zoom 2 only through S-Video. Any zoom feature will distort, to some degree, the original image.

David - In the link I provided, you see how much of the image information you lose by zooming in on it to fill your 16:9 screen (1.78:1). Most 1.85:1 movies are VERY close to filling 16:9 screens and a bit of overscan takes care of the rest so your screen is filled.

2.35 movies are supposed to NOT fill a 1.78:1 screen. They are supposed to have black bars. If you don't like them, then zooming in cuts out film information and detail that the cinematographer thought was important. You lose part of the film. This is (always) your choice, but it is not something that I would recommend. As well, you are artificially enlarging the DVD image that is coming to the projector which will lower overall image quality.

If your screen is a 'fixed' on wall screen and the black bars are just driving your bonkers, then get a screen masking system or make one. They aren't terribly expensive to buy - or to make - and only take a minute or so to put up when watching a 2.35 movie on your screen.

The last image of Spiderman on the link in my prior post shows what you lose when zooming in on a 2.35:1 film on your 1.78:1 screen. You want to lose it, then it is always your choice to do so.
