Painted Screen vs. Fixed Frame Screen

Hey guys! I'm new here, and putting together my first home theater with a projector. I've researched painting my own screen and framing it in, but I'm curious if that'd be wise over just getting an Elitescreens fixed frame. Any suggestions? I'm most likely going with a BenQ HT1075 fyi..

I've heard that great results can be achieved with screen paint, however you need to achieve a perfectly flat surface, and either know how to do it or do not (it can be a pain). If time is on your side, I like to encourage DIY solutions, but fixed frame screens can be found pretty cheap....

That's really what I've found. If you are determined to DiY, then you can certainly achieve excellent results.

I've built a screen, which took several evenings to do a good job on, and cost me over $100 in materials, including a true velvet border.

Between the time I invested in it, the difficulty I would have had breaking it down, and the expense of parts, I would never do it again.

I recently picked up another screen for testing. The Silver Ticket 110" screen from Amazon for about $250. It easily is as good as what I built myself. I can break it down, move it if I need to, and it went together in about an hour or so. No complaints on what I got there.

Not trying to discourage you if you want to DiY, but just inform you that you can get great results from cheap screens and that DiY solutions aren't always that cheap overall for good results.

If it were between the Silver Ticket or one of the comparably priced Elite Screens, would you have an opinion? Pretty similar?

I've personally built a Elite SableFrame and a Silver Ticket screen.

If there is a difference in their build quality I'll be darned if I could see it. So, I would say the $50 price difference is well worth getting the lower cost model in the Silver Ticket.

If for some reason you could get a SableFrame for less, then that would be the better purchase. Let the price wars begin!

I got the SilverTicket to use as part of my test setup. It works well and looks nice.
