The missus wold like some outdoor speakers for adding outdoor music at parties, and luckily the stereo setup is close to where she wants them (no long wires to run).

My receiver has a zone 2 on it (yamaha).

Am I correct in that all I need to do this is a small amp and the two outdoor speakers? Can I just use the amp's on/off switch to turn the outside speakers on/off? Should I mount an impedance matching volume control outside, or will the master volume on the receiver change the outside speaker volume too? If I put an outside volume control... does it go before or after the small amp?

They'll be mounted under the eaves of the house, and I'll probably place the amp in the rack with the rest of the stereo.

Thanks in advance.

If those are the only speakers you're adding you should be fine running them straight from the amp. The only down side to that is you have to go back into the house if you want to change the volume. If you add the VC it goes after the amp (amp --> VC --> speaker) just like a light switch or anything else

I installed my tSc outdoor speakers ($50, great price great speakers) just like you're talking about but added an impedance matching VC ($33) because I have 2 other zones.

You should be able to assign the AVR amps to zone two so you won't need an outboard amp. I just stick my remote up to the window and can change the volume from there but my main HT system isn't too far from the patio.

You do have several options. I agree that you could easily allow the internal amp in your receiver to power your speakers. I have a pair of office speakers and a pair of patio speakers connected to my zone 2, and decided to connect them to an Audio Source Amp 100 (< $100) that has its own speaker A and B connections. I also installed separate VCs for each pair of speakers so that I could control the volume without having to go into my living room. Works great.

I too use an Audio Source Amp 100 for zone 3, I paid 53 bucks for a refurb.

Zone two uses an assigned amp from my AVR and controls the bedroom via a Niles IntelliPad.

This looks like a good piece of advice to me, simple and effective as well.
