Outdoor Speaker Failure - Rant

I've been a big supporter of Madisound, that is until recently. I paid a bit more for their outdoor speakers, because they were designed to take the elements. After 2.5 years, both speaker cones had failed. I took the "box" apart and was disappointed to see what appeared to be cheap speakers. The best part, I looked at PE's web site, and what appear to be identical replacement speakers were a whopping $7.81 each. PE customer support recommended a mucho more expensive replacement speaker at $12ish each. Considering the environment, happy with the sound quality of the upgraded speakers.

I expect to be replacing these in another couple of years, is there truly a weather hardened 5-1/4" speaker?

I just hung a pair of HTD Q50's and they look like they are made decently and sound great. For $80 you can't go wrong!

Sorry, but I dont consider a $7 speaker 'whopping expensive', or a $12 unit 'mucho'.

If it was much cheaper, you could put a quarter in a gumball machine and have one drop out. How much less can a speaker cost than that???

Whats your point??

Unless you live overseas where the typical daily wage is $10, I am missing your point.

Why don't you just invest in a boom box? Decent sounding ones can be had for <$150 if you shop/listem carefully. These are more than adequate for a two speaker outdoor system and are 100% weatherproof, as long as you bring it inside when you're done.

...not to mention that there's no wiring hassles or remote control issues. All you might want is AC.

Sorry, way too much tongue in cheek

I paid substantally more for the outdoor speakers ($250?), based on their advertising and discussion with Madisound. Once taken apart, realized it was nothing more then cheap a$$ speakers, with good marketing. The apparent replacement speakers were $7, I upgraded to the $12 model based on PE's recommendations. If I had known how bad they really were, would have never paid anywhere near that much money. just irritated I have to spend any money on something that poorly designed. I expect better from Madisound, not blows style marketing and profit.

To save a slot,
for 90% of the time, the music is background noise. If I want either volume or quality, I will drag the towers outside. Had a friend across the lake ask me if it was my house he heard :) It's either mine, or a friends about 20 doors down, LOL.
