OK...who thinks what about the Oscar awards? I'll go first and say that I knew that The King's Speech was preordained as best picture. Oscar voters just could not resist a flick with an English accent and a person with a handicap. I think it was a very good movie, but my choice would have been True Grit or Winter's Bone. I couldn't imagine Jeff Bridges getting it twice in a row, but he WAS that good. Winter's Bone was just so tense and believable. I watched it again last week and liked it better than the first time. Unfortunately neither had Brit accents. Other awards were OK, especially in a year with so many excellent films. Bale and Otto taking best supporting for The Fighter was somewhat of a surprise, but that too was an excellent film.

I never watch them. I like to see what won, but we all know it is just a bunch of BS and brown nosing. It is Hollywood feeding its own fire, kind of like buying your own birthday gift. I am a huge fan of music an film, but these events really seem to have become so overdone.

I watch 'em, and I like it!

So, there!

I think I'm always rooting for the films that actually deserve to win an award (based on my infallible opinions). Some do every year. And I like complaining about really silly winners.

There wasn't much in the way of silly winners this year...nothing as preposterous as, for example, Avatar winning "Best Cinematography" last year. Ummmm....Academy?....there was only about 30 minutes of actual camera work in that film, and that was pretty pedestrian. All that other really cool stuff? CG. Are Pixar films eligible for the cinematography award now?

The King's Speech is a good film...not a classic for the ages, and probably only in the middle of the pack of this year's nominees, but good.

Often time it is more of a popularity contest. People just go with the flow for what seems popular that year. Hurt Locker is a good example - it was good, but not best picture good.

It's definitely a popularity contest, but not in the usual sense. The "Academy" (whoever they really are), a bunch of industry insiders, have a curious herd mentality that veers and moves for a while in the weeks leading up to the big show. For a while, it seemed like The Social Network would be crowned "greatest movie ever", then it wasn't but the King's Speech garnered the momentum. One thing that is predictable is that every so often they get into high dudgeon. A movie with a moral, or something classy and British takes the momentum and all of a sudden, a speech is more morally important than Facebook. I find it to all be somewhat amusing since ultimately, the show is about actresses dresses, how much the paid and how close they come to exposing private parts without actually doing it.

Not only is she good decoration but she actually has some pretty good acting chops. In Rachael Getting Married she's very good, even though the movie is fairly painful. Her SNL guest host episode is also quite good. I can deal with glamorous celebrities if they have humor and can be ugly now and again.
