Optical help

I jusst got a Dvd recorder and new receiver. I have a panisonic tv. I have the DvD hooked to the receiver with a optical cable and useing a s-video cable from the dvd to the TV. I can`t get the sound to work through the optical cable. The only way i could get sound was by running two rca leads from the tv audio out to the receiver,but,of course that couldn`t be real surround sound. I`m comfused with this new tech. Can anyone shine some light on this frustrating situation? Is there something i have to do to configure
the reciever for optical? I did everything in the instructions i thought. Can i use the opical cable with the s-video?Any sggestions?

There should be some setting on your receiver's setup menu for routing the digital input (i.e. your optical cable). Not knowing what receiver you have, it's hard to tell you exactly where to look. But in your setups, there should be a way to assign, for example, "Optical In 1" to "DVD". Then, when you have your receiver set to DVD, it will look first to the Optical In 1 input for audio.

Sounds like you have analog audio l/r out from your dvd/r going to your tv. This is the only way I see you are getting the dvd/r audio signal from your tv to your receiver.

Disconnect all l/r analog rca's. Run optical (audio out) from dvd/r to (dvd/r optical audio in) on reveiver. Run (S-Video out) from dvd/r to (dvd/r S-Video in) on receiver. Run (S-Video monitor-out) from receiver to tv (S-Video in). This should get the sound & picture going.

Switch receiver to dvd/r. Enjoy!

Now for the record part, that all depends on what connection options you have & what you plan to record from.

Follow zumbo's hookup instructions, assign your digital input as Engine Joe described, AND set your dvd player to output 'bitstream' NOT 'PCM' for Dolby Digital and DTS. Then all will be well.

Also make sure that your receiver isn't set to look for an analog input. Either have it automatically detect an active input or set it specifically to digital.

A little more reading through the owners manuals, but sounds like things can be fixed with no problem.

Thanks everyone,i got everything together today and it`s working good. There is probibly more i can do to enhance the sound. One i have to get a powered subwoofer. Right now i have a passive,the actually the back two speakers run through it . Thats how it was meant to work. Of course it`s not great. Wheni get a few dollars.You know?
