I currently have a older Rotel 1095 amp and the 1066 processer. Since it does not have HDMI, I am using optical to the processer from my Toshiba HD3 dvd player and HDMI to my Panasonic projector.I would like to get the Panasonic BD-80 and use the 5.1 componet to take advantage of the new HD audio formats. My question is would the componet audio be a down grade from the optical? thanks

I think what you mean to say instead of component is analog....

The biggest difference is what device is doing the audio processing. That blu-ray player is plenty capable of doing the job and will allow you to take advantage of the new formats. I personally like analog connections better, but can't even begin to tell a difference. I "want" to though.

I would give it a shot and see what you think. The new formats will be nice to have... Just know in your mind that it will be better and your bass will be richer and it will be... ;)

It won't be a "downgrade" at all ... I think you'll probably notice a slight difference in clarity and dynamics.
