Will there ever be a move over to Audio and Video over Optical....?

Ever Heard this one was up 'n coming..?

We've had audio over optical for quite some time.

I don't see any real impetus for video over optical at the moment. Some manufacturers create custom cables that convert electrical signals such as DVI/HDMI to optical for long-distance transmission, but.... why bother with it as standard?

There are a few fiber optic HDMI solutions out there. The upside is that they are more future proof than copper (theoretically) and you can make much longer runs. The downside? Cost.

Ok.... I wanted to post this question, as I have been reading and researching on the net for well over a year, and I have never seen this come up ever...

Now with that said, and having Tom Andry answered already, I will explain my question.....

My buddy came over last night, and He was wondering about my current (Temp) Pioneer Elite 81 - I am using for a Pre/Pro... I told him I am using that until the HDMI starts to sort itself out... He proceeds to tell me that everything is going to Optical A/V within the next 5 years.

Now Tom, would that just be a re-incarnation of the already implemented form of HDMI? or will it start a whole new generation of A/V connections...?

Thanks

He's just making it up.

That's one of those "everyone will have cars that drive themselves in 10 years" things.

Tell your friend that optical is just a type of cable. It is the connector at the end that makes the difference. Right now, there are no plans for any new connector types (other than proprietary ones of limited scope) that I know of. HDMI is pretty much it.

Yeah.... He is an installer/electrician and does security, camera and other... so I know he knows the difference in cabling, as thats most of his world, running cable...

I know he has done some HT installs, but I am not sure to what extent...
He is very knowledgeable, but I know that I am way more informed about the next up and coming things... and seeing as how long HDMI is really taking to gain ground, I can't see how there could be anything new on the forefront...

HDMI has so many more re-iterations to run through before It will be perfected, with all the HDCP concern, and all the handshaking difficulties to be overcome.

There are way to many company's involved in sorting out HDMI, to try and protect against any and all copy protection issues, for this to begin and end so soon...
