Hi Guys..

I just got an Oppo upconverting DVD player (980H).

I have a fundamental question. Does Oppo convert all DVD's to 1080p?? I have tried 2 DVD's now and I don't see the resolution going beyond 480p.

It will be great if you can give me some feedback on the same and on how to use the player more effectively to get the best resolution.

Thanks

You have to set the Oppo to upscale the image. When the unit is on with no disc inserted hit the HDMI button on the remote you will see the LED display on the OPPO change from 480I to 480P etc all the way up to 1080p. Set it to the desired resolution (generally the ideal answer is your displays native resolution) and you are golden.

Also note that upscaled video requires an HDMI connection. If you have the player connected some other way, you won't get upscaled video.

I had the same problem when I got mine and didn't realize that you had to have no disc in it to switch resolution :)

I did set it to 1080 and do have an HDMI hook up. I'm pretty sure I did it with out a disc in the tray. I'm not quite sure about the picture quality though I can tell a big difference in sound when watching movies. Do you have to hit enter after setting it to 1080?

No, once the light is lit up next to 1080 on the front, that is it. It won't be a night and day difference from a good 480p player, but did feel it was better with most films even compared to my 2900 - the differences can be subtle, mostly a smoothness and a little more fine detail. It isn't going to give you the same sharpness that you get with a good quality HD-DVD or BD movie.

I don't think you need to have an empty disc tray. I thought you just had to stop playback to change the HDMI resolution. Anyway, I just keep mine at 480p so my TV can scale to it's funky 768p resolution.

Right, pretty much just pop the tray open and you can adjust resolution.

I also have a Denon 2900 and have been curious about the OPPO. The up conversion video is nice but how about the audio. Particularly, does the OPPO convert the DSD stream to PCM prior to D/A conversion? I am concerned about this because it has a big impact on the sound on SACD.

Wouldnt it also depend on the display? THe OP does not mention what kind of display is being used. The 980H has S-Video, Composite, Component and HDMI output for video. So it pretty much can hook up with any TV or monitor or PJ.
I had used 981HD with its HDMI output connected to my Optoma HD70. This pj has a native res of 720p. I never had to change any settings on the Oppo. Just popped in the disc and before starting up the PJ would show the res to be 720p on the screen. So the output was downscaled.
I would imagine that if I were to hook the Oppo (981H or 981HD) to a CRT TV, then the res would stay at 480i (not sure though).

I have never seen anyone prove this to be true. It should suffice to say that the 980 is quite good with SACD and DVD-A; not quite as smooth as the 2900, but still very good.

CRTs don't work the same way as digital fixed pixel displays, so they will display whatever signal is fed to them up to their maximum resolution. If you didn't make any adjustment, then it sounds like your projector was doing the scaling not the player, since the projector will most likely automatically scale everything to 720p/1080i.

Seriously, I have no life.

That would depend on the TV. If it can process more than the 480i signal, then it would do that but not if it was a standard CRT TV. Some years back they had ID Tvs, that did line doubling, in essence 480p, but that was part of its design. It would not do downconverting from other signal inputs. Newer CRTs could have programs in it do do conversions.
