This past Saturday I bit the bullet and purchased the Oppo UDP-203 from the Magnolia Audio & Video department at Best Buy. I was torn between it and the Panasonic DMP-UB900.
Well today when I unpacked the Oppo, I looked at the label on the rear with the serial number and the manufacturing date on it. The manufacturing date on this player reads December 2016. One year ago/old.
I'm wondering if this is the norm, or should I have reason for concern? As far as the box and all of the packaging it looked to have never been into.
I haven't hooked it up yet. Trying to decide if there should be reason for concern.

I doubt it's a counterfeit if that's what you're concerned with. I'm sure Magnolia would stand behind it in any case and I wouldn't worry about it. It does seem the model came out that long ago IIRC and don't believe aside from firmware there would be any changes. You can check that on their site I'm pretty sure about version but you'll have to hook it up to find out....it's christmas, you know ya wanna hook that puppy up and use it! :) Happy holidaze!

Pretty sure the 203/205 series is the 4th generation from Oppo in less than two decades. I still use a BDP93 and am overjoyed with it's performance. I would not be the least bit concerned, Oppo builds top quality equipment. They only have two models, and two price points, some think they're too expensive, while I think they are a tremendous value at ONLY $500.

As history has shown, 2018 will probably see some Darbee equipped variants of the 203/205. But as 4K is still struggling to gain marketplace traction, I doubt 8K will be rendering your year old player obsolete any time soon!
