I cant seam to get audio out of the optical output on my oppo dv-980h . I know that the input works on my mmc-1. I read the manual it said to put the digital output to "raw" but still nothing not even a red light out of the cable.

A couple of questions:

1. Did you try swapping the cable?
2. Are you trying to play DVD-A or SACD over the optical?

Make sure that the optical cable is seated properly in the jack and the little rubber/plastic nub has been removed (sounds trivial, but it's a common mistake). It should click into place with just a little bit of force.

If all that is correct, then check if the mmc-1 (Emotiva?) is assignable and make sure that you've assigned the digital input to whatever input selector you want to use. Note that 'raw' should be the correct setting on the Oppo (although most players use the more descriptive term 'bitstream') - it means do not interpret the data, just send it out the optical output.

Plastic optical cables will fail over time, and are particularly susceptible to cracking when they get older, though environment is obviously a factor also. I have only had it happen once also, but it was very annoying to have to track it down to that.
