I own a tube TV right now, but will be upgrading my TV in a year or two, so would the OPPO DVD Player work good with my Sony Wega TV.

My Toshiba DVD player is starting to act up so I'm looking to replace it with something half descent and I noticed a lot of good things said about the OPPO.

If you need the oppo now due to issue's with your current player fine,if not then wait till we see where they are going with blue ray and dvd hd.Just a thought!!

Also, if you don't have a dvi or hdmi on your Sony tv stay away from the oppo!!! Dosen't upscale with comp cables.

I don't have a dvi or hdmi on my Sony tv so I will do another search in the archives for a normal DVD player or hold out a little longer.

I could just buy a cheap $100 unit to use until the blue ray comes along.

Do you need a dvi or hdmi to take advantage of the blue ray technology?

I don't know were you reside but LG makes a good inexpensive up scaling dvd player but no cables included go to their website.Answer to second question YES I would almost say i'm 99% sure!

up scaling dvd player?

Do I need up scaling for a regular CRT TV, shouldn't I be looking for just a normal DVD player.

If its not a Hi Def TV the upscaling player wouldnt do much.

I only sugested this because you were leaning towards oppo player. The lg dvd player and some others work with comp cables and when you do upgrade to hi scan or hd tv your set!!!;)

FYI - I had an old 1990 32" Sony XBR. When I switched from, say a football game on SD CBS to the same game on HD CBS, the difference was amazing. and much better than my DVD player. So there may still be some benefit to upscaling until you get your new TV IMO - but this is only a guess, I don't know why it worked so well, it just did. Corrections welcome!!

PS - looking at getting OPPO 971 myself - does this make sense with my setup??

My 2 cents most people will tell you the oppo 971 unit is better to be used with a larger tv in a digital format. So yes with your set it's a good investment!! Note thought, your last set would not pick up hd for football because it wouldn't be able to receive the hd single!!!

I just got the Oppo 971 yesterday and am using it with an Infocus SP4805 projector on a 92" 16 x 9 screen at 720P through DVI. The results are breath-taking! I am absolutely amazed wtih the colors and definition. I should have bought one of these players a long time ago. I will not upgrade to HD for quite some time now as this setup looks incredible. My wife thought I bought a new projector.
