If I set my oppo to lpcm and it does the decoding will my receiver play true hd and dts even if the hd audio light will not illuminate. My receievr is not playing true hd and dts in the bitstreaming mode from the blu ray player. It is kind of disappointing as I bought this denon 890 yesterday just for the new audio formats. I tried solving this problem for many hours last night but with no luck. I even updated the oppo with the new firmware today and it still won't process the oppo.

When you set the OPPO to output LPCM, then the player is doing the decoding and the receiver only sees multichannel LPCM. Therefore, the receiver doesn't get a TrueHD or DTS-HD bitstream - it won't report decoding those (because it isn't) and it will have no way of knowing if the incoming LPCM signal was ever in one of those formats. There is nothing wrong with this arrangement, and you are losing nothing.

If you really want to see your Denon decode the formats, set the HDMI Audio output on the BDP-83 to "Bitstream" instead of "LPCM" - but using "LPCM" does not hurt anything. If setting the player to Bitstream doesn't work, check to see that "Secondary Audio" is set to "off" - having it turned on will prevent a player from being able to output the raw bitstream because it must be able to integrate secondary audio streams (menu sound effects, etc.) into a decoded LPCM signal. The BDP-83's quick setup wizard automatically disables secondary audio for this very reason when you select the "Advanced" audio mode that is intended for use with HDMI v1.3 receivers that can decode the new formats.

If the Oppo is anything like the fat PS3 it should because you have to set PS3 to LPCM in order to get True HD just the logo won't light up on the receiver. I have looked at the Oppo manual and that looks to be the case.

Thanks for the info but I am still a little confused as my denon player only shows pcm and Dig with the two speakers FL and FR showing on the display(input) so I am not sure if it is even going to multi channel. This is the case in bitsteam and on lpcm from the oppo. On the far right all channels are lit up(is this the multi channel output). The oppo is stating M.Channel output

Thanks in advance for both your guys help

Is the Oppo connected to HDIM 1 input on the 890 and is the input mode set to auto or HDMI? page 37 of the manual.

Try an switching it and set it up according to pages 35 and 37 of the manual and then we can go from there.

Okay I feel like I'm reading the contract for my 1st mortgage here. Change the decode mode to PCM and let me know what happens. I will keep going through the manual.

It most likely has nothing to do with the Oppo at all, but the Denon receiver. I'd bet money you need to update firmware, if bitstreaming is desired.

Here is the owner's thread at AVS. I am not going to research how to do this for you, so good luck on finding the help you need!

Ok, it looks like your only option might be to have the player decode (unless you're willing to ship your receiver to a service center). Sorry to break that news to you.

The issue involves the inability to bitstream the HD audio from BDs to the Denon 2010 AVRs. It can be resolved by either installing the firmware update or simply letting the BD player decode the audio and send it as PCM (which would sound the same as if the Denon decoded it). The issue may have been solved in the newer mfr'd models which can be confirmed by checking the firmware date as mentioned in my 2310 post in my sig. The update can be installed on the 2310 by the user because it has a RS-232 jack whereas the 890 does not and would have to be shipped off to an Authorized Repair center to receive the update.

In the configuration you suggest, there would be no issue as you would only be connecting an optical cable from the BD player to the AVR. The best that optical can transfer is DD/DTS 5.1 or PCM 2.0 which is fine if all you plan on playing are regular DVDs. However, if you plan on playing Blu-Rays, then you'll need to connect an HDMI to the AVR to transfer either the multi-channel PCM or bitstream HD audio.

Thanks for all the help. I also researched that earlier and found that out. I was hoping it would be something else.I had enough of messing around and returned it to BB.I picked up a yamaha receiver for the same price and had it set up in 20 mins with all the decoding working great. I was a bit disappointed as I liked all the features in the 890.Thats the way it goes sometimes. I am liking the new sound though. Thanks again to everyone who helped me out..

Glad you got it sorted out. Shame the Denon was so uncooperative...
