OPPO DVD Player review

I just got the unit on Sat. I had it up & running in no time. Playing DVD's through the DVI hookup into my 50" Sony LCD at 1080i has been nothing short of spectacular. The picture quality is just outstanding!!! The digital sound is also extremely good. All dialog is crystal clear & surround effects have you jumping out of your seat. The one big surprise is the sound quality of the analog 2 channel. I was not really expecting anything this good at all. I haven't ordered cables for the DVDAudio hookup yet so I can't comment on that. All in all for$199 this is an absolute steal!!

I'm guessing you're enthusiasm was generated by your purchase of an Oppo DV971H?

If so, it's on my short list, but I may hold off until the new Oppos are available..
At any rate, congrats on a good purchase!

That's the one. Why wait? OPPO sends out updated firmware to bring your present player up to date w/ any new upgrades that they have.

mine is on the way, *getting excited*.

Personally I am of the mind set that says, if u can afford it BUY IT! you never know when your going to die. life is short, and there is ALWAYS gonna be something bigger, better, faster yada yada around the corner if u wait. Just like in the PC world.

I would reccomend to anyone thinkning of getting ANY low cost new DVD player to go for it. who knows about all that blue-ray mess and when it'll even be affordable to get.

I think he means that he wants to wait for OPPO's new upcoming HDMI DVD player, and the replacement for the current DVD971H.

Just curious.....

1st off I am glad it has made you happy, I have read a few reviewers (not many) that have been disapointed. I love mine!
My question is would anybody be willing to post there video settings from the DVD player only? I have messed around with them and relize it will vary greatly on TV, lighting,DVD quility and so on but I am really only looking for some test settings. Overall I am happy and would not change anything. I am wondering if anyone else is having issues with dark scenes with Blue in them. ie. lots in DOOM. My screen is blurred and can harly make out stuff at times. I am hoping this is just a setting I can adjust but am starting to fear it is my TV. Doing some searching on google I did find a good article on my tv and recomended settings...this helped me tremendously.

I was searching for something simalar for the DVD player but so far have not found anything. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

doom played fine for me. I do get some errors in finding nemo.

turn off all the extra CCS noise reduction sharpness stuff.

put in whatever setup dvd you have and calibrate your tv/dvd player.

make sure in the first options menu you have the oppo setup to use the DVI output.

Thanks

I had all the CCS and noise reduction off, it was not so much a error as it was just real blurry, not clean and sharp under other colors. I may be totally missing it but on main menu I have:

TV Display

OSD Lang

Screen Saver

Light Control

Angle Mark

Then these items are not selectable to change on this menu

DVD-Audio Mode DVD-Video

Video Mode Video2

DivX(r) VOD blank

Sorry if I am being overly n00b here. I just don't see a option HDMI,however it must be using it cause that is only cable I have hooked to it other than optical?
Thanks again for the info.

Why no SACD?

I think the Oppo looks like a great player and it has gotten rave reviews from folks on this site. I would already have one on order if it only played SACDs. I want something to do it all (up-convert, SACD, DVD-A, etc.) without spending close to a grand.

Can anyone guide me to a site that shows the upcoming Oppo players? Any of them play SACDs?

You won't see anything for HDMI as the player only has DVI output, but consider them to be the same thing as far as you are concerned.

Make sure there is no disc in the player, or have the dvd tray open when you enter the setup options. Select video 2 which is DVI output only. To switch betweewn upscaling modes, you can't be playing a dvd, it has to be stopped first, then hit the DVI button to switch between output resolutions. I think the only option I have on as far as video properties is noise reduction, other than that everything else is off and it looks great on my tv.

Thanks,

The no dvd or dvd tray being open helped out allot! I am trying out the noise reduction now as well, seems Truelife needs to be on for that to be selectable so I have that on as well. Thanks again for the responce.

No problem, that's what we are here for. It took me a while to figure out the open tray or no dvd thing.

Another quick question. When I use noise reduction setting I have I think 3 choices low, med , and high possibly another one. At anyrate it seems with any of these on (the higher the worse it gets) I get what I can only explain as trailing or bluring or better yet stretching. Basically the peoples faces or arms that are moving blur, blob and stretch.can anyone reproduce this effect or at least explain it a bit better than that? Is that normal? am I doing something wrong. Basically I love the piture the dark blue/black is still driving me mad though. Even going through the Avia setup 3 seperate times. (each time I admit I think I get better at it but still seems I am missing something)

again thanks for your time and posts.

I would just turn all that off, including the trulife... I changed my settings and found that it's a bit better without all those things on.

I was considering buying the Oppo but was not aware of an HDMI version
coming out. Is there a date as to when it might be available?
Thanks, Grateful11

I don't know any more than you, I was just told that there is one in the works in another thread a while back.
