Do you plan to use the DAC's of the player or just use HDMI? How many SACD's do you have?

The question is, are they the same price?

You might just get the $99 (free S/H) Pioneer Elite SACD/DVD-A/DVD/CD player that DavidTwoTrees got from Vanns.

If you are a hardcore and must have that DSD-Direct SACD, then get the 2930CI. But just be warned that in order to even get DSD-Direct, you must BYPASS all Bass/Speaker management and run ALL SPEAKERS FULL RANGE/Large 20 Hz - 20 kHz. Otherwise, it's no different than a $99 Pioneer Elite SACD/DVD-A player.

I've compared SACD-DSD vs. SACD-PCM, and I cannot tell any difference whatsoever. However, some people say that they can tell the difference.

The Pioneer Elite SACD/DVD-A/DVD/CD has the same picture quailty as the oppo or the 2930ci

the denon is abought 550.00 new but I was looking at used ones around 300.00

Light This Candle, Rc!

I said this in the other thread you started about this.....
I could not tell the difference in sound or picture quality from my Denon 3910 that I bought for $800 used and the Pioneer 48av that I bought new for $99. And the Pioneer had newer technology. Was it built as well as the Denon 3910? Nope, but I wasn't going to dig a trench with it, it just sits there. Did it have the same internal chips as the the 3910? Probably not. The 3910 retailed new for like $1200 and the Pio was $100. I watch less than one movie per week and rarely listen to music on my dvd player. So. For me, the Pio is perfect performance to price ratio while I wait to go blu ray. It sounds like you are leaning to the Denons. Get a used 2910, or 3910 if you want. They are both excellent units and will give you all the picture and sound quality modern technology can give you in your price range. Light this candle! Buy that unit, soldier!

The op states he has no use for hi rez capability. Not sure why he's looking at universal players. Actually, the denon 2900 was/is a legendary unit for dvd playback a few years ago. They can be had for a song.

What Im looking for is a somthing that will give me the best picture and sound quality under 500.00 non blue ray. the reason Im leaning to the denons I had seen some used for sale in the 300.00 to 500.00 range used. I do not have any SACDs.

the reason Im kinda streeing away frrom blue ray is I have read some post that they do not play SD DVD very well don't know if the is just some of the lower end ones or what plus at some point Im going to buy my son a PS3

also do all the non SACD DVD players play audio the same or do some do it better than others

It depends on the player. The UPSCALING may not be great on all players, but all of them will play SD DVDs fine. The 983 has been tested as being one of the best SD DVD players period, so I don't see the Denon besting it for video quality. Note too that once you start watching BDs you won't really care how well the player upscales SD DVD because it still won't look as good as BD.
