Hello. I am an older feller that is brand new to this forum. I am slowly putting together a home theatre setup, having now built all the speakers and purchased an HT receiver and 58" HD display (just bought it last week!). I am looking for a good quality Blu-ray player now so I can enjoy HD movies on my new tv.

Could any of you please provide me with some recommendations beteen the two units above? I have some NAD equipment and I enjoy it, but from what I have read the OPPO performs extremely well and represents great value. The NAD model is a good deal more money too. I may be fine with the standard model from Oppo as opposed to the special edition on,e I just thought the reportedly improved audio section on the SE version may be better to have.

Thanks very much

I know nothing about the NAD, but upgraded my Oppo 83 to the SE. If you're planning on using HDMI and letting your AVR do the BM and eq processing, then there's no reason to go for the SE unless you want to utilize the analog 2 channel outputs. The analog section of the SE is a very nice improvement over the 83 and rivals many top dollar competitors for a reasonable price. Is the analog section of the SE better than HDMI pass through? That would depend. I've read where some think so even without the processing. I think it largely depends on your rig. What both the 83 and SE give you are the universal features, stellar DVD upscaling and BR performance. I don't think any competing brand, no matter what the cost can claim to outperform either Oppo on the video side.
