Oppo BDP-83se for 2-channel music - and reported firmware issues?

I am new to the Audioholics forum and have been following recent threads regarding the Oppo Digital BDP-83
and BDP-83se.

It sounds like various owners such as yourselves have discovered some issues regarding the BDP-83s
firmware and bass management and have reported channel dropouts etc.

As a DV-980H owner, I have been interested in the BDP-83 (and now SE) since last summer and want to
purchase a BDP-83se for 2-channel (2.0) music use. (Due to limited room space, I won't be doing the multi-channel
5.1 audio route or using a sub-woofer.)

Instead of buying separate high quality CD and Blu Ray players, the objective is to have a Universal player
with high quality analog stereo output.

My intended use of a BDP-83se would be as follows:

1) CD player with high quality output (DACs) for analog 2-channel stereo.

2) Blu Ray player with high quality 2-channel stereo output for Blu Ray and DVD based music such as
concert films, etc. I do own a few hybrid SACD disks but would be playing them back in 2-channel.

Since I only plan to use the BDP-83se analog outputs for 2-channel stereo, will the current firmware,
bass management and supposed channel dropout problems be an issue? (I do not use a sub-woofer o
multi-channel.)

It would be nice to have such a full featured universal player at this price point, but might it be wise to hold off
on purchasing until various technical issues are resolved?

I would appreciate any insights that BDP-83 and SE users can provide.

Regards.

Ron

Ron;

If you read my test supplemental report of the 83SE you will find my recommendations around the issues I discovered:

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/t.../oppo-bdp-83se

Just set your speakers to large and their won't be a distortion issue, especially since you aren't using a sub anyways.

I haven't really experienced any audio dropouts and I use the SE player all the time in my family room system (HDMI 7.1 audio) and my workout room (2CH analog audio).

Its a fantastic player. Good luck!

I experienced some drop outs, but it turned out to be a handshake issue and not a player issue and that is now resolved. I was already happy with the 83 and I am even happier with the SE.

I have been using the SE for the past couple of weeks exclusively. I can recommend it without reservation!

I have played redbook CDs, DVD-As, XRCDs and SACDs through this player and I can safely say the the sound quality is superb!

In fact I like the sound from this player so much that I gave my CD player to a friend and use the SE as my only optical media player.

The SE would be perfect for what you intend. And you really don't have to worry too much about firmware, very few companies are as conscientious as Oppo when it comes to updates.
