Oppo BDP-83: Can't Play Blu-ray Movie!

The BD movie Adjustment Bureau, doesn't play on the Oppo BDP83, not even with the latest firmware. The disc plays through the ads then gets to TOP MENU and crashes. Nice work, content protection.

Ironically, I had no trouble playing it on my 2007-vintage Sony BDP-S301. Oppo disappoints me. First the mediocre audio DACs, now the fact that it can't play a movie that my older, non-updated player can play. A $500 waste, if you ask me.

I spent from 8:30 this evening until 9:52, trying to get that disc to play. I updated the firmware over the internet connection and rebooted the player and it STILL would hang at TOP MENU. This, after watching 7 minutes of ads. You can't even watch your Blu-ray disc without being spewed at with advertizements.

Imagine getting your whole family together in the first floor theater for a movie, only to delay them because a disc won't load. After ten minutes, the inlaws got up and went back upstairs. My wife finally lost patience after the firmware upgrade. I lost patience in Blu-ray DRM and the MPAA after that.

I think I'm done with Blu-ray. I may as well sell the Oppo. A player that doesn't play a movie disc is useless to me. I never had these problems with DVD, VHS or Betamax. Blu-ray is very disapointing. Watching movies should not be a lottery/crapshoot!

That's another reason why I wish Oppo and others would make a nice audio only player that plays all existing HD formats and can be used as an external DAC (not important but a bonus) so people don't end up with an universal for that little bit of convenience and space saving.

I used the 95 for audio only as I find no advantage of using it for BD or DVD because my other players can do as good or better so why wear the Oppo down for no reason. The problem is, I pay for the BDP function for nothing.

That's must have been totally frustrating! Now that you've gotten a (hopefully) good night's sleep - are you still mad at blu-ray in general? I love the higher definition video, and maybe the audio is better (DD and up sound great to me).

Your Sony blu-ray player did awesome with it, so no reason to give up the HD good stuff! I can't recall ever not being able to play a movie on my 2009 Panasonic - they all work great. In this case, I say hate the player, not the game.

Lesson learned to not spend $500 on a blu ray clunker. This reminds me of another discussion here:

You got some screenshots to post? You can save other people some time here who are thinking to buy Oppo. And honestly I am not entirely convinced to use a reasonably big clunker with a blu ray player as an external DAC. There are better smaller chips and alternatives out there - say how about a Logitech SqueezeBox. But I agree the issue is with your Oppo since your Sony plays it fine and not the Blu Ray.

Don't dump Blu-Ray just because of you bad experience with the OppoBDP83. It seems as though Oppo has been having some problems with the Blu-ray movement. On the other hand, it seems that Sony doesn't flinch at it. It seems as though anytime I've owned or used a Sony product it just plain worked _ come hell or high water _ even if it wasn't perfect.
