Opinions on types of surround speakers

Hey everyone. I don't post here too often but I have one questions about my home theater setup.

I have just recently purchased a new set of front LCR speakers and was looking to repo pose my old front LR channels.

I bought the definitive technology 9040s for front LR and a 9060 for my center channel. I prefer powered towers because my room is quite small (12'X12') and adding subs would not be ideal.

I had some old 8020 powered towers that I used as front LR previously and have nowhere to put them so I decided to add them as surround speakers 180 degrees from the main listening area roughly 6 feet away.

I run two LFE splitters off of my two Sub outputs on my Denon 4200 for a total of 4 subwoofers which for me (75% movies, 25% music) is fantastic.

Now that you have an idea of my setup these are my questions:

Am I making any audio sins using powered towers for surround speakers? Would I be better off moving the towers to rear surround and purchasing a pair of bipole surround speakers or does me having a small room negate the benefit of bipole speakers?

It is not that I am unhappy with my system, I am just curious to see if anyone here feels I am missing something using these as surrounds before I go out and buy a new pair just because. I know I should test it out to know for sure but mounting speaker and then taking them down if I am unhappy with them would be the last step.

My room acoustics are horrible anyways so this Is not the biggest issue. I will post a picture of my room tomorrow morning.

Seriously, I have no life.
To be honest I think you would be far better off without surrounds in that space. The surrounds are far too close to the listening chairs. I'm no advocate for bi-pole surrounds. Good monopole speakers make the best surrounds I think.

You think so? I was running a 3.2 setup for a while but when I added the surrounds it was much better in my opinion. Better meaning having sound coming from all around rather than just the front is preferred. I get where you're coming from though.

It might be a little unbalanced if a listener was at one end of the sofa or the other but for anyone sitting alone in the middle of that sofa I could imagine it sounds great. Enjoy it!

You might try raising the surrounds to 12" to 18" higher and see what that does for you.

I will definitly give that a try, I haven't thought about that. I'll try it tonight and report my findings!

I would as well put them a little higher up, maybe a couple inches over the light switch and then tilt them down. I would also install a couple of small hooks on each end of the doorway so you can hang 2 horizontal acoustic panels across the opening to the other room.
