I made a similar thread about this but this is more specific....

I have Samsung Full HD tv connected to DVD player via HDMI...

I have 2 old speakers (Rogers Studio 1's) which are awesome... broken receiver though...

I want my tv and dvd sound to come out these speakers and was thinking of buying this:

Just some questions:
This is a 5.1 receiver so is it ok to just use the 2 speakers for now? Will a receiver of this price produce good sound?
How do i connect the speakers to the receiver? and how do i connect the dvd and tv and all that up? Need someone to explain this simply as I have no knowledge at all.

Well, I can't speak for others, but I myself...

... am kind of hesitant to get involved answering a bunch of basic questions for a guy who hasn't even bothered to glance at an instruction manual. I know you don't have it yet, but I'm pretty sure that even a chld could figure out how to connect speakers.

And, yes, it is that simple if you just take some time to read it. It's a lot simpler for you to read it and try to think for yourself than for us to try to think for you and try to explain what's already covered in the manual.

Some guy got paid good money to write that manual to try to make the hookup as simple as possible. Give it a try and apply a little thought before posting these questions. Maybe then if you ask a pointed question instead of "do it all for me" type of query you might get a response.

But, top be fair, you did ask two pointed questions, for which you deserve answers. Yes, that receiver can produce decent sound and yes, you can run it safely with only two speakers. It's all in the instruction manual. Read it.

Should be fine, as long as you have enough power for your typical volumes with your speakers' own characteristics.

Just tell receiver the only thing connected are the two speakers, and the receiver should downmix surrounds + center info to the mains. You may suffer some compression due to that, but at least you can do it to begin with.

How do i connect the speakers to the receiver?
Use speaker wire. I recommend Monoprice.

and how do i connect the dvd and tv and all that up?
Seems fine to me. Run video directly from sources to display. Run SPDIF/optical/dig-coax audio directly from sources to receiver.

Just so you know, your receiver choice will not handle new codecs AFAIK, but you never mentioned bluray, your budget seems to be modest, so I think you're fine.

Hey, Alex. I'll try to take a look at the details later tonight.

For starters:

1. You can certainly use that receiver in stereo (two-channel) mode. Not a problem at all.

2. That receiver cannot process audio over HDMI. So, you would need to make another audio connection between your DVD player and the receiver other than HDMI in order to listen to the DVD player through the receiver. If you have and optical digital audio or coax digital audio output on the DVD player, then you're set for the DVD player. Also, if you have an optical digital audio or coax digital audio output on the TV, then you're set for the TV.

3. Do you know what impedance the Roger speakers have? I haven't look on the internet too much for them, but if you already know, that saves some time. You need to check if a receiver can handle the impedance. If they are 8 ohm or 6 ohm, then I know that receiver is fine. If they are under 6 ohm, then we'd need to investigate some more.

EDIT: Looks like the others got you started while I was typing (and discussing dinner options with my parents :)).

Of course I would read the manual, I just wanted to make sure it would all work before I went out and spend $350...

Also the speakers are from 1983... I needed to be sure they would connect to a receiver in 2008... that's all..

Anyway thanks for the help guys..

Alex, you can download the owner's manual from the Yamaha page to which you provided a link (I'm pretty sure it's listed right there, but the page isn't loading for me at the moment). I got my information by skimming through that document.

Nowadays, a lot of manufacturer's will have the manuals online (and you can find them other places sometimes, too). So, you can read through them and check if a receiver is a good fit for you.
