Its pretty good IMO and is the same thing as the RXV-1600 but missing the extra remote and fold down face plate.

I wouldn't mind having one. It would be nice if it would allow use of the presence channels at the same time as the rear surround channels, but one can't have everything, at least not at its price. Whether it will meet your needs or not depends, of course, on your needs, but it should be more than adequate for most situations.

Overall, I'm very happy with mine. It replaced an Onkyo TX-NR801 (HDMI switching was the reason)

My only issue has been the fact that the 12v trigger shuts down when selecting multi-channel output.

This is apparently normal behavior for Yamaha receivers and I'm using the switched outlet to trigger my power supply instead.

the YPAO feature works okay on it's own, but did a good job after I manually set distance, crossover frequency and speaker size.

If you plan on purchasing it, be sure you get it on sale. I (and several others on this newsgroup) have gotten it for about $650. Onecall and some other merchants have been running no-notice specials.

Don't rule out the RXV2500. It's going for $500 - $550, having just been replaced by the RXV2600. The 2500 has an extra 10wpc over the 5990.

The HTR-5990 is very much like the RX-V1600. If he wants the digital video switching, the "old" RX-V2500 won't do. Otherwise, though, I think it is worth considering.

Not power difference over the 5990 unless you go for bragging rights. "miines bigger" ;)

Very true, and it can also be said you may never see the difference between HDMI and component with an HD signal. With component, there's no HDCP issues. I still like the ease of hookup with HDMI. Too bad we can't jump ahead to HDMI 3.1.

The downside to the RXV series is you either get a very short warranty (30 days at Ubid), or need to purchase an extended warranty through an online dealer (usually an extra $99). The HTR's come with full mfg. warranty when sold online through approved dealers.

Anyone experience compatability problems with Motorola HD cable boxes? I had A "PRO" install my 5990 with a MOTO HD cable box. Tried to use the DVI HDMI cable from box to RVR and no picture.
