Opinions on Klipsch Reference series

Ok, here's the deal, I'm about 3 weeks from finishing my new family room. I need some speakers and a receiver. I'm probably going to go with a Denon 3805, or the Yamaha 2500 and use external amps.

As for speakers, I listened to the RF-7's and fell in love with them. I am big on 2ch music. As for the rest of the speakers, I was thinking of going with the RC-35, and the RS 35's. Not sure on the sub yet.

I never got to listen to any of the klipsch centers or surrounds. How much of a difference is there between the 35 series and the 7 series? Am I going to be loosing a lot, or should I spring the extra $$$$ for the 7 series? The room is 25x25x8, concrete floor, 3.5 walls (big open area to the kitchen).

hey mac,

now I'm relatively new to the HT scene, I'm also really into the Klipsch sound, and would like to offer my 2 cents. I have a pair of RB-35's, an RC-35, and am going to invest in rears pretty soon (just have a pair of old SB2's as rears right now). Having spent alot of time listening to the difference between the 35's and the 7's (in my local HT store and at my friends place, he has RF-7's, RC-7, SVS 20-39 PC plus) I can say that the 7's are certainly a bit better. I would have gone that direction, but I just couldn't afford to. My friend runs them through a yahama 2500, and its the best system that I've ever heard for movies. And clearly the RF-7's sound awesome for music as well. If you can afford it, I'd say go with the 7's

Hello
The RC-35 is not a system match for the RF-7 it uses a completely different tweeter The correct center is the RC-7. I would also seriously consider the RS-7's instead of the RS-35 The RC-35 and RS-35 are matched for the RF-35
Hope this helps

PS
There is a huge performance jump from the RF-35 based system to the RF-7 based system.I have both for comparison and the difference is significant when A/B-ing

I figured as much, I guess I'll go with the 7 series for everything. Now I need to figure out which sub I want.

Got a set of demo's you'd like to unload?

Maybe one of those SVS Cylinder subs. Or a pair.

I don't know Jax. The room is pretty big, and really dead. I am worried the cyl subs won't be enough.

What about using a set of RF-3's or something for the rears? I have a hard time shelling out $700 for a set of surrounds. I have the space for more floorstanders.

Well...I'll throw in my two cents worth.

First of all there really is a big difference in price as well as performance. I’ll share with you some of my recent decision and hopefully they’ll help you out in your decision making. I recently purchased the RF-35's, RC-35, a Denon 3805, and a Denon 1920 DVD....I'm still using some older Polk towers for rears until I can spring for the rs-35's, and a sub. My living room dimensions are 19 x 16 x 10. Let me say this, even without a sub, my wife, from the kitchen, is constantly telling me to turn it down. When I’ve demo’ed my new setup for friends, I have the volume on the receiver at -13 and it's really loud. I liken it unto crystal for the highs and amazing chest pounding bass, that's not bottoming out for the lows.

I definitely would not pair a rc-35 with rf-7's, however I have talked to guys that have paired the rc-7 with rf-35's with very good results when using a sub, and as far as the surrounds go, the rs-7's are REALLY BIG, down right HUGE, and heavy....almost to the point of overkill. With your room the size that it is....you're borderline going either way.......if you bought the rf-35s you may feel you wish you had just a little more punch and aesthetic looks, if you buy the rf-7's you may feel that its a bit overkill.

I would also consider the room layout as another important deciding factor. How far is the seating from the fronts? How far will the fronts be spread apart? Is the floor carpet or wood? Will the surrounds be very close to your seating arrangement? If so, the rs-7's will blow you away....of course you can always turn them down. With a room that size, (5000 sq. ft.), a lot would depend on the layout. If your seating is far from the fronts, I’d be inclined to go with the 7 series. Your room acoustics will play a factor as well.

What are you wanting out of your system? Simple enough of a question, but think about it. Do you like it loud? Are you a movie buff or a music man? All this has to be considered.

Cosmetically, the 7 series has a much more polished look. Klipsch isn’t known for their great looks, but the 7 series does stand out above the rest of the reference series’ as far as appearance goes.

As far as the receiver goes, I’m really pleased with my 3805, I down right love it! I liked the Yamaha 2500 as well….but having listened to them both preferred the Denon. As a side note, I heard the 7’s from a Pioneer Elite 56 with an external amp and that sounded good as well.

Lots of things for you to look at and consider...but again I come back to the price. Honestly, if I could have sprung it....I would have went with the 7's all the way around with a killer SVS PB12-Ultra sub. But my wife, would have sold my Pathfinder to pay for it..lol. At any rate, remember that the shopping, buying, and set-up is half the fun, so take your time and think it through, bounce it around a bit and I’m sure you’ll enjoy whatever you decide upon. :)

If you want to have the same (similar) timbral match, try not to use speakers that are tooooo different. You will find that the RS-7 and RC-7 are so well balanced with the RF-7's that you really would be compramising the sound stage if you go for something else. :p Stretch the budget if you can or wait until you can get what you want rather than compromise this early in the process. The best solution would be to get 7 - RF-7s, now that would be a perfect sound stage..

Cheers...

Dapper Dan... :)

The RF-35's work very well as surrounds for the RF-7's if they are placed
in the correct locations behind the litening position. I just completed a system with RF-7,RC-7 RF-35 surrounds and R-5800W EX channels and it sounded awesome.

As for the Sub you can get a brand spanking new RSW-15 MSRP $1800
for $950 if you know where to look. That subwoofer will bring the house down:)

Though I've cut and pasted items from another persons auction or web page before because I ddint have a dig. camera, but I would always state so. My neighbor has a ebay business and her account got hacked about a year ago. She had roughly 500-600 feedbacks and someone hacked it and started using her account to sell expensive audio and tv's and because she had such excellent feedback people would buy.....anyway ebay got a hold of it but not after several people got ripped off and she had to start all over with her feedbacks and business on Ebay...she was pretty ticked off about it, cant say I dont blame her.

I've been ripped off twice on ebay once as a seller and once as a buyer....so I don't mess with it to much anymore.

I don't know how people get away with it! They have to send pymt to an address.....cashiers checks, etc. have to be made out to someone. IP's can be traced! Maybe law enforcement and fraud departments just lack the manpower to deal with it all. I don't know.

On a side note, Buckeye, did you change your pic next to your name?
