I know open reels, espeially the large mutli-track ones are used to master every analog recording we see on LPs and even CDs. Even direct-to-disc recordings have open reel back-ups. They are now being revisited by record labels in the remix to SACD and DVDA reissues. There are also open reels in this large format (10" reels, half inch) for home use.

Are there still users of large format open reels out there? Are pre-recorded open reel tapes worth buying? Having read the technical specs of these machines, they seem to be far superior to CDs and LPs in terms of frequency response and dynamic range. Any feedback? Thanks.
