I don't really need a new sub, but I was looking for something new and thought that should be a speaker project. I was looking at amps and drivers and came across this open baffle GR/Rythmik setup. It has a unique look and I have heard other subs from Danny and Rythmik For the price, I think this is what I am going with:

According to GR, it will be flat into the teens and be very accurate coupled with the servo amp. I will have to build an enclosure for the amp as well, since there is no "box" so to speak, and the lack of a highly braced cabinet is one of the selling points of this one for me. It isn't that I don't want to build a heavy duty cabinet, but I can build a test mule of this quick and see how it sounds without spending days or weeks on the cabinet work. I haven't bought the amp or drivers yet, this is just the direction I am looking. Out the door I think I am looking at about $750 for drivers, amp, wood and paint, not including an enclosure for the amp. This one is actually smaller than my current sub as well :)

Looks interesting J. I'm still getting my mind wrapped around these open baffle designs. I like the layout of that cabinet. You could always wrap it in grill cloth if you don't want to see the exposed drivers.

I was thinking the same thing. I will have to see how good or bad it looks once built. I would probalby only need to cover one side, but I think I won't really mind seeing the drivers or I can always turn it sideways :) I like the fact that it is a little different than the norm.

I like the contrast of wood color and the geometric colliding planes ... fine, I just made that up. :D

It still looks cool and I would love seeing this come together.

It looks so fake I have a hard time buying that's a real sub. Where are the drivers? Are you playing a trick on us?:rolleyes::D

I was also playing with Inventor 2011...with the new environments (background) and realistic rendering (real time rendering) features borrowed from Showcase. The background is a 3 dimensional image that is wrapped around the part so it looks like the object is there, with realtime lighting and reflections from the environment.

You had me intrigued when you told me about this at your place the other day. The rendering looks pretty sweet. But screw covering the drivers with grill cloth. This is a design that MUST be showcased! I'd make the box out of plexiglass!! :D

So I've never seen or heard an open baffle sub before. What are the plusses and minusses of this type of enclosure?
