awhile back i put up a post about my brothers onkyo receiver that is 1 year old. the back right channel just stopped working and it is still under warranty as he just sent it back. my question is, is that i noticed when he was watching tv on direct tv and he changes from one channel the next the receiver will change its sound settings as you change the channel. for example if you are watching channel 10 and switch to 11 the sound setting will switch to another setting (like from 2 channel stereo to pro logic not necessarily those 2 settings as i was just using them as an example.) i am not familiar w/ onkyo but its not supposed to do this is it?

It depends on which model it is and the audio format used by the TV channel.

The newer line allows you to set defaults for different audio formats (they are pre-assigned as a default, but you can change them) so if eg. you have 2 channel PCM set to default to PLII Music but DD 2.0 set to default to PLII Movie, it will change automatically when the TV channel audio format changes from PCM to DD 2.0.

i guess that makes sense just never had that with my yamaha recievers, i thought it was annoying when he was changing channels and you hear the receiver switching from one setting to another.

I have my receiver set to auto so when I am watching standard defintion t.v, sound comes through in stereo sound and when I switch the channel to a high definition station the receiver changes its setting to dolby digital 5.1 (if the station brodcasts in that format).

thanks for the responses, i never owned an onkyo so i didnt know it did this. how about if you are watching a movie on HD and the receiver is set to DD 5.1 then a commercial comes on and the setting changes. I am assumiing it changed because the commercials are broadcast in stereo?
where is the auto option on the receiver? so it can be set to however it should be broadcast?
