MY brother has a onkyo receiver that is just about a year old. It is under warrnaty, however the back right surround channel seems to have stopped working. He said he tried a different speaker and it also is not working. the left side channel is working great but the right just stopped suddenly. Thankfully it is still under waranty. Ever heard of this from ONKYO recievers or what it could possibly be?

Most likely a power output device failure in that amp. That is a hazard with all equipment, and obviously with seven channels rather than two your chances are correspondingly increased. We now have this RoHS compliant lead free solder to worry about. This solder sprouts tin whiskers and is going to inevitably lead to increased failure rates over time, for equipment manufactured after June 2006

That unit needs service.

moreira, firstly I will never, ever know as much about this stuff as TLS dude, but I'm just curious to shed a bit of light...

So you mean right back surround only? Left surround and left rear is working?

Is this happening on multi channel 5.1/7.1 tracks from DVD's? Or is this happening when the receiver is trying to matrix 2-ch into 5.1/7.1? Or both?

Have you tried re-setting the receiver?

I doubt this is a software problem. If it was both surround backs I would by it. However just with one channel this is much more likely to be hardware than software. My guess is that the power amp for that channel is down.

when you said tried other speakers ...

on the right surround channel. Did you brother completely disconnnect and run a new wire to a new speaker? or at least check and redo the connections at the receiver. Possibly there could be a whisker short or a crimp short in the cable. Completely diconnect the rigth surround wiring and check with some ohmed wiring and a known good speaker. Otherwise the advice TLS suggested about the power amp for that channel going out seems like the likely cause.

In deference, I assume you are right, and this must usually be the case. However, I have ran into a unit that could play all 5 or 7 speakers with a multi-ch disc with digital input, but the the right surround and right rear went out with an analog 2-ch input that was trying to be matrixed. So, I guess with very particular cases something strange like this could happen.

Im sure the odds that this was moreira's case is very low, but I was just curious....

he disconnected the wire from that terminal and hooked it up to another channel and the same wire and speaker now worked. put it back to the broken channel and no luck.
