Suddenly I'm stricken with upgraditis. (Thanks, Buckeyefan. :p )

Even after all I've read here...all the wisdom that is provided...I'm totally overwhelmed by the choices in receivers. I want 7.1, 100 wpc (the unit will never be used for more than Axiom M60 spec-type speakers), useful tools like pre-outs, auto-EQ, and a reasonably flexible LFE crossover system. The latter is the main reason for my decision to upgrade...the Panny has two settings...100 and 150Hz. Bah, says I.

And yeah, being a poor old and disabled guy, I must keep it as inexpensive as possible. The Denon 3805's have come down, but not too much if you want a warranty (I do if I'm gonna buy new). I ran across a unit and liked what I saw...the ONKYO TXSR702B, but I'm completely ignorant of the nuances of Onkyo receivers. Reliable? Spec trustworthy? I've had Yammies, and am not opposed to another....

I'd like to keep my investment at <$600, if possible. Buying for today's (much less tomorrow's) top of the line bells and whistles is unnecessary. I'm open to used equipment from trustworthy citizens, as well.

More wisdom is needed. Thanks in advance for your contributions. Your opinions of any brand/models at this price point will be helpful.

(And Jax...I ran an AH search for the Onkyo. No soap. ;) )

That 702 is a heck of a receiver. Feature loaded, powerful, and I even think good looking. The only bad thing I have to say about it is based on second hand information that the 02 series by Onkyo were a little wonky on the QC side. I've seen the 702 in action, albeit a long time ago, and I remember being very impressed. The prices on Onkyos once you cross the border into Canada are insane though. Usually at least double the street price. The 702 is not a new receiver but it is up to date with all the surround modes, has all the bells and whistles one could want, and is a heck of a buy at the current price IMO. I don't think you could go wrong with it. I would take it over the Yammie 5790, but I know others opinions will differ (big shocker on this site  ).

I would recommend Onkyo. I've always bought Onkyo and have never had any problems whatsoever. It's one of those personal preference things - once you find a brand you like, you tend to stick with it.

I have also heard the second hand information about problems with video on the '02 models. Most of the posts on the topic here, at Secrets, and AVS were user error, although it's always possible there were a few defective units. I can tell you that my 502 has no issues at all. I never did pull the trigger on the 702 because the 703's arrival was imminent and I wanted to wait to see if they add lip-sync adjustment to the 703 (the 802 has it and they usually migrate features from the higher models down to the lower models with every release year).
