OK, this is my issue. I have an Onkyo tx-sr 605 and I now have a blu-ray player (LG BD 370 and I have it connected with HDMI. I have the blu-ray set to primary pass-through. But I cannot get Dolby digital or DTS. The manual seems to indicate that the receiver will not accept those codec’s over HDMI but only coax and toslink. Any suggestions guys?

Hi. The 605 will absolutely accept and decode Dolby Digital and DTS over an HDMI input.

Some questions:
  • Are you getting any sound at all? If not, it might be an assignment issue for the connection, which is covered on page 48 of the owner's manual.
  • If you are getting sound, what does it say the audio encoding is?
  • Are you sure that you are playing a Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack on the disc?

yes I am getting sound and picture the PCM light is lit but not the DD or DTS I have tried several DVD's all with the same result on my old dvd player connected via toslink the 605 would sense the codec and activate the correct format automatic

I'm still looking, but one note - if you set the BD370 to do DTS Re-encode over the SPDIF connection after setting the HDMI Primary Pass-Thru, the HDMI connection will have reverted back to PCM Stereo automatically.

Okay, I think I see where you were coming from on your first post. Page 61 of the 605 manual states:
The Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes
can only be selected if your DVD player is
connected to the AV receiver/AV amplifier
with a digital audio connection (coaxial or
optical).
However, the manual states on page 34 that the following are supported over HDMI:
• 2-channel linear PCM (32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit)
• Multichannel linear PCM (7.1 ch, 32–192 kHz)
• Bitstream (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio)
Perhaps you simply can't select "Dolby Digital" as a surround mode in the way that you are used to doing. Try selecting the "Direct" mode and see what it says.

Are you certain you've selected HDMI as you input source?
Not trying to ask a stupid question but........

Onkyo pg 85, make sure the Digital Input Signal is set to Auto.

The Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your DVD player is connected to the AV receiver/AV amplifier with a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical).
Seems to be a limitation of the 605.

Also checkout Assigning Listening Modes to Input Sources, pg 78.

Glad to hear it!

Was it the Onkyo that you updated and got everything to work?
