Onkyo tx-sv313 and new Yamaha 5.1 speakers

Seem to be having some trouble with my sound. My Onkyo receiver is old and I bought it used so not sure if it's up to snuff but hooked up new Yamaha 5.1 speakers with powered subwoofer using 14g wire. Playing through old Sony Trinitron tv.

I do seem to get sound from rear speakers when playing tv/movie but none whatsoever when using tuner/cd player. There isn't a dedicated subwoofer out so I just have it hooked to an rca audio out and it seems to work. Problem is the rear speakers. Being that this isn't a true 5.1 receiver the rear speakers don't seem to be getting the true sound they should. Seems they only work intermittently and the sound distorted.

That is a very old unit and not very good for today's needs. The tuner/CD only put out stereo audio so that's all you'll get with this unit. Does engaging/disengaging Dolby ProLogic surround make any difference? If you're expecting constant surround output, it's only there when it's encoded to be there.
