Onkyo TX-SR875 and Yammy C750 won't play nice together! Need some help here.

Hello all:
Joe B. in Warwick, NY here. I have been having the worst time trying to get my sound Right, between my new Onkyo TX-SR875 and the movies I play on my Yamaha C750 DVD/SACD/CD player. My sister and I just spent over 2 hours (my eyes stink in restricted light situations, and she really helped out well tonight. Thanks Teresa!) trying to get the sound right on "Raiders of the lost Ark", and "Underworld". We failed miserably on our attempts at both movies. The Yammy will load up the DVD and then in it's menu screen, it will allow you to choose one of the formats it has detectd on the movie that is loaded. There is usually some sort of format that eludes to a 5.1 surround mode, and that's what I like to use. Well, no matter what listening mode I choose on The ONKYO 875 AVR, you can never get the voice track at a level that is easy to hear. (even when the mode is set to the same as the format code that appears on the back of the DVD's box) Everything else sounds great!! And yes, I did the whole Audessey set up too, and even tried to set the levels higher on the center channel's volume. Still. no luck. A little help please. BTW, I am currently set up in 5.1, with my remaining two side surrounds en route. So 7.1 is almost done!!
Take care all!! Joe B.

Movies have a wide dynamic range and the dialog level is often fairly low (to leave room for the gigantic explosions).

Auto-setup routines do a decent job but you should verify that it set each channel to Small if you have a subwoofer (they often set the front speakers to Large). It is perfectly acceptable to bump up the center channel volume if you want.

One thing that can help is dynamic compression ('late night' mode on the Onkyo). Compression reduces the peaks and brings the average level up so dialog is often easier to hear. The explosions in an action movie won't hit so hard, but the dialog will be easier to hear.

Donde esta "Late night mode", on my 875?? Sorry for the espanol, just in one of those rare form moods tonight. I am bushed over all of this hassle lately. I just want to pop in a dvd and listen to the BOOMS, KABOOMS, and Nasty language, all without having to strain to hear them. Thanks! Joe B.

The remote should have a dedicated button labeled 'L.Nite' if Onkyo hasn't departed from tradition with the new models. It's also accessible via the setup menu under 'Audio Adjust'.

Late Nite mode only works on Dolby Digital material and depending on the sound track, the effect can be subtle to extremely noticeable. I often use High for L.Nite mode.

What speakers are you using? If the center channel is a different sensitivity that will factor in. Also be sure the channel output level is set high to match the other speakers. Did you use the Audyssey Auto EQ for setup? Auto setups aren't perfect, and make mistakes if your room's acoustics are different.

Your front soundstage is probably mismatched with the smaller Tannoy Arena 500C center to the larger Sensys DC2 L/R. The Sensys DCC would be the proper center.

Turn the TONE CONTROLS to OFF.
I had a similar experience with a HK247 receiver. After doing the automatic calibration, the Tone Controls screwed everything up.

still trying to fix audio between Onkto 875 and Yammy C750

Well, if I turn off the tone controls, number 1-by what steps?, and number 2- won't I have to go in and adjust everything every time I turn th receiver on? To the person who said I needed a Sensys DC Center to match the front left and front right DC2's, I cannot do that in this case. The Arena 500C has to stay right where it is, besides, it's A Great Dual Concentric Center speaker. BTW, the Sensys DC 2's are Dual concentric speakers also. I think it's more the Yammy DVD/SACD/CD Changer, rather than anything else. But, something tells me that one of the very many audiophiles/home theater guru's out there on this site, knows a quick fix to this problem. Thanks all! Joe B.

Only if we are given more information. How about the channel level settings. Have you ran test tones?
