Onkyo TX-SR805; Severe Disappointment

Last month around the 7th or so I purchased a new Onkyo TX-SR805 online. I had it shipped to my parents in Arizona from Illinois. They got it in and sent it to me in Honduras. I'm in the military so they have to forward my mail to me since a lot of companies frown on sending large, heavy, expensive pieces of equipment to third world countries. Anyway, I got it in last night after weeks and weeks of waiting and to my dismay it's toast.

So expensive. So pretty. So damn angry.

When plugged in, I pressed the power button, it made a click noise and the LCD Display came on and then quickly turned off. I checked the book and it said the receiver had gone into Amp Protection Mode and that I should unplug it from the wall and let it sit for an hour and try again. Tried again and this time the LCD won't even come on. So, I have a 65lb. paper weight in my room here on base that cost me about $800.00. I checked through the box again for warranty paperwork, nothing. The box, by the way, is beaten badly and the styrofoam inside is all broken. I didn't even get the Set-Up Mic...

Is there something I could change inside or something I could do quickly to diagnose what is wrong with it?

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Did you buy it brand new and where did you buy it?

The only reason for the LCD to turn off is for the Pure Direct mode. Press that button to see if the LCD turns back on.

But it doesn't look good.

I did press the little Pure Button on the front out of frustration, I will try that to see if the LCD comes back on.

I bought it new from PaylessMerchandise.com (not too excited about their service btw), from what I read in all of my online searches I'd get the Set-Up Mic in the box and I am more than certain I should have some kind of warranty paperwork in the box.

Thanks for the reply.

You welcome.

Yeah, you should have definitely gotten both the set-up mic + warranty card.

That reminds me of Itschris's experience when he bought his brand new Pioneer Elite receiver from digitalcraze.com. It was supposed to be brand new, but I believe it was missing things like warranty card and mic, etc.

Some of these internet companies are unbelievable!!!

It's a shame!

Uggg. So sorry for your experience. That sucks!

If it's still not working, you may want to check the fuses. It's a shame to even suggest that on a "new" unit, but that might be the issue.

Btw, welcome to the forum!

If the setup mic and warranty card are missing then it is suspicious. Every manufacturer produces a few duds now and then and you may have gotten one that was returned because it was DOA and they didn't include everything that would come with a new receiver.

I'd try to deal with the shipper about the condition of the box and styrofoam. If it was badly damaged in shipping you may be able to get a refund or credit from the online vendor you purchased from.

The 'click' on startup though is normal. It will also click when you turn it off, switch inputs, or it takes more than a split second to determine which decoder to use for the audio it is receiving. That's a 'feature' I'm used to with Onkyo receivers - when I hear the click I know my macro is done and I can let go of the button on the remote control. :)

Hey Adam, if the OP checks the internal fuses that alone may void his warranty. Onkyo puts a seal on the chasis to check for this. If it is broken, it is my understanding that it voids the warranty unless done by an Onkyo approved service center. Of course, I could be wrong here. But, would rather error on caution my friend. Just thought I would mention it. No pun intended at all.

Cheers,

Phil

Excellent point, Phil. I wasn't thinking about that angle, and thanks for pointing it out. Gotta take that into consideration. I kinda assumed that the OP wasn't going to be sending it in for warranty repair.

Like you, I did not think so either. However, Onkyo needs to know about this. Perhaps, they can be of some assistance. Our Directed Rep is also an Onkyo Rep so I will run this by him. I can NOT do that until the first part of next week. Maybe he can give me some good advice to pass on to the OP. I thought that was the least I could do.

Cheers,

Phil
