Onkyo TX-SR707 Static Screen issues

Hi all,

I have just replaced my Denon AVR-3300 with a new Onkyo TX-SR707. Everything hooked up fine, it sounds great, picture is great, but there seems to be a problem occasionally with the video. It goes to a tannish sort of static screen when switching sources, and sometimes just when it feels like it. Sometimes it helps to turn it off, then back on, and or toggle the video between 1080i and 1080p.

I have a Panasonic Viera plasma which is more than capable of 1080p, a Samsung BD-6500 Blu-ray, Dish HD receiver 722, a Wii. The receiver is supposed to up-convert all signals to 1080p if the TV is capable, correct?

I have read some issues of this in some forums, but not sure how to proceed.

Is this a firmware update thing? If so how would i do that.

Thanks in advance of any help on this issue.

First thing I’d do is disable the up-scaling feature and letting it pass through unmolested, pg 43. Your TV will probably do a better job.

You may also want to do a detailed video input setup, starting on pg 44, by blanking (----) any unused input sources for that connection. For example, HDMI blank for Game, Component Game to the connection being used (In 1/In 2).

Start there and see if it helps.

Thanks,

I'll try all that, I had it on "Through" at first but I was unsure of the best way to get the best picture, but it makes sense, I think the Dish is only 1080i, but the Blu-ray is 1080p, the Wii...

thanks again

I put it to "through" and it seemed to be ok. then it did it again with the Blu-ray player. I had to turn it on and off several times.

It may be just the Blu-ray it has the problem with. Could it be an HDMI cable not good?

I blanked out all HDMI connections not used and the component video, to which I have nothing connected to. I have the Wii in the game input with just composite video and audio.

I'll keep trying stuff

thanks

If it's only happening with that one source, then it's probably a kink in that chain; the player, HDMI cable, or one of the connections at either end.

I upgraded my setup last summer and had an issue where the HDMI cable worked fine going into a smaller Sony display being used for preliminary system setup. But replacing it with my new, bigger Mitsubishi display it didn't work. Once I tried a different cable, same as the initial one, voila'!
