ONKYO TX-SR605's poor pull down processing

Hi guys, I repost this topic because it was under my other thread for the ONKYO 674 and 605, and I think it is starting to get off thread topic so here it is.

I am very much interested in Onkyo 605, but I saw from a bunch of reviews (some website and cnet review) that the 605 "lacks or has poor 2:3 pull-down processing" to be honest with you guys, I am not really sure what that means, but isn't it the processing that makes the content of DVD to fit your screen? I am not sure how critical this is, but I have a SONY 23" Widescreen TV/monitor.

I was wondering if anyone has any thought on this? if the 605 still worth it, or if there is any way to fix it? or I should start looking at other receiver in this price range that has a better 2:3 pull-down processing? and if so, which brand should I look at?

HD source

I would not expect great video scalling and processing from an entry level receiver like the 605. For comparision the Onkyo 875 includes an excelent video scalling chip, but it costs $1k more.

To aviod the processing limitations, use a good upscalling DVD player or an HD source line BluRay, HD-DVD or HD channels on cable or satellite.

On SD 480i signals, you can also try the processing in your TV vs. that in the Onkyo receiver.

DVD Players

I have the entry level Oppo DV970 player and it does a good job with my 32" LCD TV. It and the higher end models have better scaling and processing than most DVD players and is likely better than the Onkyo. If you send an upscalled HDMI signal though the Onkyo, then you are not subject to its limitations.

Some of the HD-DVD players (Toshiba HDA2/A3) are just over $200 so that might be another good option. They do a good job of up of upscaling regular DVDs and will also provide an HD source via HD-DVD.

I have been watching some of the baseball playoffs in HD via OTA antenna and the picture is amazing.

I have an Onkyo 605. For disc players I have an Oppo 980, Sony BD-S300 and Toshiba A2. I think they all upscale exactly the same and that is to say very well. My TV is the one that does a lousy job.

I looked at this 2:3 pulldown issue in the Onkyo receivers and came across this thread on another forum.
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=68689

What caught my attention is the following:
480i upconversion (like the 605 + 805) is very poor. The chip used failed the Silicon Optix's HQV 480i deinterlacing test which means that it can't deliver all the detail of 480i sources when upconverting.

2:3 pull-down processing is very poor resulting in jaggies clearly visible.
Is there anybody here who can comment on these issues?
