ONKYO TX-SR605 Receiver: power trip

My receiver has the following flowing through it: Blu-Ray, Directv HD receiver, HD Television, Wii console and 5 speaker surround. Lately while either watching a movie on the Blu-ray or playing Guitar Hero III the receiver trips the power.

It doesn't seem to happen when playing other Wii games. Also when I plug the DirectTV receiver phone line to the phone jack, it kills the phone connection (no dial tone).

Thoughts on what's going on? Is one component the problem?

When you say "flowing through it" do you mean the other components have their power cords plugged into your
TX-SR605?

cords

No sorry, I should parse my words more carefully. The power cords all plug into an external power strip. The components connect through the receiver via AV and HDMI cords.

A lot depends on finding out, what's on the circuit.
It's highly possible that a circuit in your house feeds more than one room. So if you have your amp, TV, sub, all on the same circuit; (not necessarily the same power strip) it's entirely possible that load is tripping the breaker.

Does the circuit trip during bass heavy passages? That's when the sub presents it's greatest load.

Where is your subwoofer plugged into?

For a quick test, unplug the sub and play same movie, or Wii game that tripped the breaker last time.
Try that before the next step.

The next thing would be to find out how many rooms are on that circuit, and what's plugged in.
First, get a test lamp; you can use a desk lamp. Shut off the offending circuit, and go around with the lamp and see what circuits are dead. For example, if you find out that a computer, or water cooler is on the same circuit along with your TV and sub; that is more than enough to trip a circuit.

If you can duplicate the problem when the volume is tunred up on blu-ray or Guitar Hero then go back and check the wiring on your speaker and AVR connections you may be experiencing a whisker short (where one of the wire strands is touching the wron connector). ... I am making an assumption that Guitar Hero and/or BD are being played at a little higher volume

If you aren't using banana plugs get some they are dirt cheap at monoprice.com and have the screw on type. It should prevent any wires from crossing.

What speakers do you have and what ohm rating do they have.

Only the speakers, or plug would be causing a trip. Your a/v plugs aren't going to cause a power spike.

So it's most likely the way the speakers are connected to your receiver.

The level you are pushing the speakers at.

Or the overloading of a power strip. I suggest you isolate your receiver on a different power strip. Receivers push and pull high amp loads as such I think it's always a good idea to give them their own power strip if you can. APC makes some that go really cheap at bb.

thanks

I'll explore those options to narrow down the possibilities. Thanks.

I forgot to clarify something... when you said "power trip"
Do you mean that a circuit breaker in your panel trips, or your receiver goes into protection mode and shuts off?

reciever

The receiver shuts off. The power strip and the other components stay live. For example, when playing GHWT on Wii, the game is still playing, but the receiver cuts out.

Receiver overheating?

So I tested removing the bass speaker and then the speakers themselves. Seems like that's not the problem. However, a more obvious suspect has shown itself.

Because my shelf system is enclosed and the tuner was stacked with other components on top, the receiver couldn't vent properly. I"ve moved things around and am going to let things heat up to normal use and see if Guitar Hero will trip it again. Does that sound reasonable?

Absolutely; heat is the enemy of electronics.
