Well i got 4 polk audio R50 s ordered and need to order a receiver. What do u guys suggest between the Onkyo TX-SR502 or the Pioneer VSX515K? Do u have any other suggestions between that price range? ($140-$199) or somewhere close to that price range? Plz help me quick as i need to order this today or tommorow. Thanks.

also one more question, which one will pump out music louder in ur experiences? the onkyo is rated at 75watts per channel and the pioneer is rated at 110 watts per channel. Thanks! :)

If you can afford $239, you can upgrade to a refurbished TX-SR503. The 503 is a 7.1 receiver and has better DACs than the 502.

I'm sure both of those receivers would be fine for those speakers, I would choose the pioneer as I had a vsx514 with some very average speakers and it sounded just fine. By the way you should really consider a sub with those speakers because I think they only play down to about 65Hz[not real low].

Just a note though I have read some reviews on those speakers and it seams that people liked them for the most part at moderate levels but the speakers seemed to break up at high levels.

is about $90 more justified for the 503 over the 502? Im already a little over my budget with speakers so im not sure if i could do it. But if it is a night and day difference then ill have to think about it.

I'd take the sub first. You will still get dialogue out of your fronts. You will get a fuller range if you get the sub. I got my fronts and sub first before I got C/SL/SR

I agree, you can live without a center, but you're missing out without a sub. If the 503 is out of your budget, go for the 502. I think it is pretty much the same receiver in the Onkyo 780 system I installed for a customer recently. Of that $500 system, I think the receiver was about $400 of it, because it was actually pretty decent, and if it is similar or the same as the 502, it should work fine for you (as long as you don't have a big room).

guess ill go with the onkyo 502 (for $150 refurbed) then so i can save up sooner for a sub. What would provide more power to the speakers tho, the onkyo or the pio? And is there any sub in particular that you guys would recommend with this setup?

Not a night and day difference. The 502 is also very good. If the budget is that tight, go with the 502.

For the sub, take a look at the HSU STF-1

Ok... im getting the onkyo 502. 1 more question tho, plz bear with me, i will be hooking a HDTV cable box, dvd player, and vcr all into the receiver. The hdtv cable box and dvd player will be using component video to hook into the receiver, and the vcr may use either composite or svideo. I will be hooking the component out connectors to the tv, now will the VCR which is hooked to the receiver with either svideo or composite connectors, go thru the component connection to the tv? or will i have to have seperate svideo or composite video cable going to the tv?

You will have to have a separate composite or s-video connection to the tv - the 502 does not transcode any video signals. I know, because I have one. :)

aw that sux. im in a situation where the wire going to the tv will be seen in the open because the tv is in a cabinet built into the wall. any creative ideas?

Eh, if the wires are going to be seen, then I would say just zip-tie them all together or get one of those conduit-hose lookin' things and run them all through it. That way you see one larger thing instead of a bunch of small ones. I don't know, I'd really have to see it to have a "creative idea" :D

Umm the TX-SR502 is only $120 manufatured refurb at Ubid. Wait + shipping makes it $150 so nvm. Its great though, even though it says "Minor Cosmetic Defects," mine is perfectly clean(no scratches or dents, nothing) it looks perfect, except for a maybe messed up sticker, which I don't count as a cosmetic defect because I'm peeling it off.

ok... time to update. instead of 4, i only got 2 of the Polk R50s. So ive planned to use those as rears, and get the Polk monitor 50s for the front, is this a bad, good, or doesnt matter much idea?

It should sound fine, but the speakers aren't really going to match. But if you aren't too worried about it then you should be ok!

The only thing is you won't get as much bass out of the R50's as you will the Monitors.

I may be late on this, but while the 502 is a fine 6.1 entry level receiver, the refurbed 602 at $249 is a much better deal. Skip the 503 step...
