Onkyo TX-SA607 / Linksys DMA 2100

Originally I was supposed to hook this up to my new HTPC in late summer, but by the grace of the gods I have gotten all my speakers to Japan for a bargain price. So until late July I am going to have to make due with my DMA 2100 media extender (even though it won't play mkv files and it sometimes shuts down mid movie, grrr...)

My question is how to configure this operation. My TV has 1 HDMI cable spot. I'm assuming this is the cable from the Onkyo output. So where I I plug in my Linksys HDMI cable? Into any one of the HDMI in's on the Onkyo? Or do I need to use other cables?

Thanks for any help you can offer me. I am new to this mid level Home theater game. I have had a cheap Panasonic 2.1 system for so long that I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this Onkyo! Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

Hi Sam,

You just answer your own question indeed.
The HDMI out fom your Linksys goes to your HDMI in of your Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver.
And the HDMI out of your Onkyo 607 receiver goes in fact to your TV HDMI in.
No need for other cables, that's the beauty of HDMI simplification, only one cable for high resolution picture and high resolution multichannel audio. Got to love it!

Cheers,

Bob

lovely, then what function on the Onkyo do I go to to access the Linksys? DVD?? Or am I confused? Will it be on one of the aux channels on the TV?? Thanks again for your help.

Very easy, just plug your Linksys in the HDMI input #1, and go to your receiver menu and assign that HDMI input #1 to "CBL/SAT" input source for example.
Make sure your receiver is on, and when you chhose the "CBL/SAT" input source, you will get the sound from your speakers and the picture from your TV, which must be swith to the HDMI input.
Of course, you'll have an HDMI cable going from the HDMI out of your receiver to the HDMI in of your TV.
If you have a separate DVD player, just plug it in the HDMI input #2 and assign that input to "DVD" input source in you receiver. If it does not have an HDMI ouput, just use the component out of your DVD player (blue, red, green cables) to the component input of your receiver, and from the component out of your receiver to the component in of your TV.
See, it's very simple. And have a look in your manual, it's all indicated how to do the connections and set things up, in particular in the section about "source input assignment".

Cheers,

Bob

Note: Hey Sam, just take your time reading your 607 instruction manual, so you understand how that works, and how to get familiar with this new high tech stuff.

pretty simple indeed. I just did not see a listing for either my extender or my HTPC which I'll be getting in late August. I just assume the HTPC will take the place of the Extender. Thanks so much for your help!

and since the TV only has an HDMI plug (coming from the Onkyo) I need a cable (coax or optical) from the TV to the Onkyo for audio/video as well? or will just that one HDMI cable be sufficient. Sorry I am looking at the diagrams in the manual but they are confusing. SO many options, variations, etc...

Hi Sam,

Nope, you don't run the optical out from the TV to the optical in of your receiver.

The HDMI cable is all you need for both Video and audio.

In a near future, we won't see any more composite, S-Video and component video inputs and outputs (well maybe few component ones).
Also the regular RCA jacks will greatly diminished to only the essential.
I even notice that the optical inputs are starting to decrease too.

Eventually the back of our receivers will start to look like the receivers of yesteryear, with mostly HDMI version 1.3a, 1.3b, 1.4, 1.4a, 1.4b and 1.5...connector inputs and outputs.
But then you will find, up to 18 or more speaker inputs!
(That's 36 or more individual speaker's binding posts!)

LOL. Progress is so much fun. More so for the un-initiated. ;)

Sam, do you actually own the Onkyo TX-SR607 as of now?
It is my understanding that you do, but I just want to make sure.

I live in Japan so what I own is the Onkyo TX-SA607. I downloaded an English manual on my PC, but since the receiver has arrived I have subsequently found that it does not fit in my current TV stand, so now I am waiting on a flat screen wall mount so I can get the TV off the top of the TV stand to make room for the Onkyo. That and the Ascend Acoustic 5.0 set up and the HSU sub are due to arrive at the airport next weekend so my situation is still a bit "unpacked".

I really appreciate all of the advice though. It's a bit overwhelming...but a lot of fun at the same time!

Hey Sam, it seems that you are worrying too much before the river runs it's course.
Don't sweat it man, everything will be just fine. :)

Just like I said before, just take your time and read the manuals of your components to get acquainted and understand how you do all the connections and how audio is carry through the various type of connections.
And also how to set things right from the menu setup for all the audio and video adjustments.

Keep in touch when you get your stuff.

And try to learn the most by yourself, so you have a better understanding on how things really work. You know, an update with the new high technology.

When I start in audio years ago, there was no audio forums, no internet; so I learn everything mostly from reading magazines, I subscribe to many of them for many years. And also by having friends that have the same hobby, and also by becoming friend with audio dealers.

Today with the internet, it seems that a lot of people are searching for an easy solution, but they don't learn the operational side of things...
And after their system is all set up, don't ask them any technical questions, because they are totally at lost! ;)

Cheers,

Bob
