hi, i purchased a 906 a couple of weeks ago and having been using it with no problems. however the last few days i cannot get any sound from the unit for about fifteen minutes after i turn it on. i have paradigm monitor 90p speakers bi-amped and a brand new samsung plasma as well. my main source is a bell expressvu hd-pvr but it hasnt mattered what the source is there is no sound. my speakers arent showing up in the graphic in the top left corner of the display either. i have changed every setting and connection possible but nothing works other than leaving it alone and waiting. any help is appreciated.

Have you tested it on another source. Cable boxes and tuners are terrible with HDMI handshake issues and no receiver is immune to them.

Try power cycling your cable box while the receiver is powered on. If that works then the issue is your cable box.

If it doesn't try test tones on all the speakers. If you hear nothing contact onkyo for further assistance.

Do you mean the graphic in the top left hand corner of the 906’s display? That graphic represents the type of signal that is coming into the 906. If nothing is lighting than that means the 906 is not registering an in coming signal.

If you are using HDMI connections then you are most likely experiencing handshake issue just as lsiberian has already suggested.

If you are using connections other than HDMI then your problem may be more serious. Not to say a 15 minute handshake is a good thing.

I could strangle the person who proposed all the handshake stuff for a cable boxes and tuners.

thanks for the replies. the graphic that i was referring to is the one representing the individual speakers. right now each speaker that is hooked up is showing in the graphic. when i turn the receiver on all those boxes are empty until i start getting sound. and there is nothing below for type of audio signal either until the sound comes through.

i am using hdmi cables from my sat receiver through the 906 to my tv. i have tried other cables for various components like my dvd player and ipod dock neither using hdmi to the receiver. it doesnt seem to matter though.

this is a real pain in the ***. who wants to wait fifteen minutes to hear anything? is this something i am going to have to live with or should i return it? would a firmware upgrade help any?

Definitely call Onkyo technical support. They can offer tech advice and assistance like giving you a DSP upgrade if you need it. If they can't help you fix it, they can arrange a replacement, since it's only been a few weeks. At least you can be confident that there are enough 906's in the country that a replacement unit will arrive quickly if you need to go that way. Call them first but make sure you have some time to wait on hold.
