Onkyo TX-NR906. Can't get DTS-HD Master Audio

I just opened the brand new Onkyo 906 today at my job and could not get DTS-HD to display on the screen. I have it connected from the blu ray player to the receiver using HDMI. Does the cable really matter? On some of the monster HDMI cables, the higher models (800 and up) say that it will carry the DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD where as the lower models don't state anything like that. I know that monster is over priced and is never worth it, but do HDMI cables matter at all?

Also, what else could be the problem? Should "DTS-HD MSTR" be displayed in the listening modes just like all the other ones?

What BR player do you have?
In order for a receiver to display DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD, the BR player has to send the audio to the receiver via bitstream, so the receiver can do the decoding (rather than the player).
If your BR player is capable of sending bitstream audio, you usually have to select that option in setup.
My HDMI cables are a few years old (Monoprice) and work fine.
I have a Toshiba XA-2 and a Panasonic BD-30, both of which are bitstream capable, connected to a Yamaha RX-V3800 via HDMI. The receiver displays and decodes the HD audio codecs fine.
So, check your BR player.

I have the Sony S300 which does not say Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD but I looked at the manual online and it says it does do bitstream. From what I remember, when you go into the audio set up, it will say "downmix" for both "Dolby Digital" and "DTS", instead of "Dolby Digital" and "DTS". What should it say to get bitstream?

Your Sony S300 will not bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA. I just read about it recently because some store had it for really cheap and my friend was looking for a blu-ray bargain.

The best you can get is LPCM output which unfortunately will only give you decoded Dolby Digital+ or DTS. No lossless except for blu-ray movies that have uncompressed LPCM as an audio track that you can select.

From what I've read, the S350 will stream DTS-HD correct? Also do you know what option I would select in the audio menu?

If bitstream is an option it will say bitstream. Did you return your S300 for the S350? Smart move.

Oh nice receiver by the way.

Oh it's not my receiver. I work at an electronic store and I was demoing the 906. I have to switch out the blu ray player now.

Aright so I switched out the sony s300 and put in a samsung BD-P1400 which supports both dts-hd and dolby truehd. I went to the audio menu in the player and switched it ti bitstream so the player doesn't decode the audio. Now that I have a movie playing (xmen on blu ray) I only have one more listening mode availble which is dts es discrete or something. What exactly is this listening mode and how does it compare to dts-hd? Is there something I am doing wrong because what I really want is dts-hd to be displayed on the onkyo 906's screen since isn't it the best listening mode to have on while watching a blu ray?

While we are on the subject, what are all your favorite listening modes when watching a blu ray movie?

I never use any listening modes because that employs DSPs or "Post Processing", which increases measurable distortion. For TrueHD, I keep it on plain TrueHD. For DTS-HD MA, I keep it there. For LPCM, I keep it LPCM.

I can't get "TureHD". I set my blu ray player to output bitstream but the only additional listening mode i get is "DTS ES Discrete" or something. What am I wrong wrong? Is there something I have to change in the set up menu to get "DTS HD"?

Do you have any other BD players at your store? Like a Panasonic BD30/BD50 or Sony 350?

See if you can turn OFF the DTS-ES Discrete. Play with the buttons and turn off that mode first.

I assume you know that some BR movies offer only 1, or 2, or none of the HD sound formats. They usually tell you on the back of the case. If not, in the beginning of the movie they usually let you select language, settings etc., and you should be able to tell whether the selection of DTS-HD, MA, Dolby TrueHD etc. are available.
