Onkyo TX-NR905 - Initial Thoughts & Experience

I now have everything completely hooked up and seemingly programmed correctly. Though, I haven’t had a chance to go through the Audessey (Sp?) setup yet. I fine tuned the manual setup using the traditional method w/ a SPL meter. I was really curious to see how the sound quality stacked up to my old Pioneer VSX-D710S since I had some time with the PSB’s hooked up to it. I must say, there’s a noticeable SQ improvement in most situations but, not all. I think it really shows in the extreme details, ie. The highest highs and lowest lows. The extremes are much cleaner now. It also seems that the towers and sub are happier with the 80hz crossover point. PSB 6i sub is more responsive. The 905 really shines at louder volumes where the Pioneer would have started to fade. I’ve yet to take it beyond -15db…for one, I rarely like anything that loud but, I think ears would start bleeding shortly thereafter

I LOVE the layout of the speaker terminals. By far the easiest wiring job I’ve ever done.

It was a good weekend for movies due to the storms so, we watched Finding Nemo… completely different movie. The soundtrack is rather amazing now. There are so many details that we missed before. Like the scene where they are above and below water, the rip current & the scene where the “niece from hell” bangs on the fish tank, suprised me. I thought the house was going to fall down!!! We also watched Transformers, this soundtrack was clearer and better detailed. We followed these up with Michael Clayton and Rendition but, we hadn't seen either of those before.

One issue I’m working on is the video switching delay. It takes a considerable amount of time to switch from say, OTA broadcasts to the HDMI input but, is fine going from HDMI to OTA. This could be a command delay setting with the remote and partially due to the TV but, I think It’s likely the nature of the receiver.

The light shading/contrast detail and PQ of Cable broadcasts is improved by the S-video connection through the 905 over running the cable directly to the TV. Nothing drastic, but noticeable. Wish the cable box had a component out.

I switched my HD antenna from the TV to the receiver and was instantly surprised with the quality of HD Radio and the additional stations. I like the lack of static...so long as the 0's & 1's get there anyways...

Internet Radio is not as easy. Though, I like the fact that you can go right to the receiver via the internet, copy the link from the internet radio station and paste it right into the listing of up to 20 stations. Cool! The problem comes in finding acceptable internet radio streams in the supported formats: PLS, M3U & RSS. It seems most are .FM, .asx or .aspx. Of course, I could be looking in the wrong places but, I searched pretty hard and gave up after finding three that I liked.

I also tried out the USB mass storage capabilities. Thus far, I’m really disappointed with this feature. First, it says “Random playback supports up to 9,999 songs per folder. If a folder contains more than this, songs over 9,999 are not included in random playback.” I have over 14k songs in multiple folders but, neither folder has more than 9,999. It will only display 974 songs! On top of that, you can’t simply scroll through them, you have to toggle down through each song or toggle to the side to page over 10 songs at a time. Lastly, you can’t search for another song while the current song is playing. Again, I could be missing something somewhere, just my experience thus far.

I figured out the problem with the receiver not outputting sound to the TV. It will only output sound to the TV via HDMI if the sound comes to the receiver via a HDMI source.

I noticed no decrease in PQ by running the PS3 via HDMI through the 905 vs. straight to the TV.

I’m definitely going to have to vent the closet. I left the door shut for about an hour to test the Harmony 890 RF remote setup. It also works great now that I have it programmed. The next thing, I hear a scream coming from the closet. So, I open it up to find the fans on the PS3 about to initiate liftoff! It almost sounded like a jet engine from a Lear  While it's hot, it's not much hotter than my old Pioneer. Maybe 10-20 degrees. I completely expected this due to the increase in output and sheer power. In fact, the same thing would've likely happened with the Pioneer but, I wasn't able to shut the closet door due to a hookup issue after mounting TV & while waiting on the 905. I'll try to get a thermometer on it soon.

Hey Bro,

I just got my 905 and am eager to get it up and going but wanted to ask if u think there are any heat issues and if I should get a fan for it. I have heard there are heating issues for the 875 and am worried if there are any with the 905 even though it has 2 Massive Toraoidal transformer for Audio & Video Processing. Also do u think i should get a extended warranty fo it???

I love my 905. Its performance and feature set is awesome. The short answer is, it depends. Where and how will it be mounted? Enclosed or open air? Other equipment near it?

Read these threads to see more about my experience:

I never purchase extended warranties as the are usually a waste of money in my experience. They have so many "outs" in their contracts that they can usually deny most claims. However, there are exceptions to the rule. Caveat Emptor!

Well I just ordered a new Bello stand that is an open concept which will have plenty of breathing room and is not a closed cabinet. Please see the pic attached with details. The only other equipment around will be the sub that will be next to the a/v stand and above the 905 will be the blue ray player and the Panamax in the middle and so on. I am hearing really good reviews on the receiver and not heard one bad thing about it and doubt that it is poorly made that would cause it to die in the next couple of years so I guess I will take my chances!!! Thx for the input!!!!!

The TX-SR875 doesn't have a toroidal power supply. From my understanding the TX-NR905 has a toroidal power transformer for the amplifier section and two additional iron C-core transformers for the audio and video sections of the receiver. The TX-SR875 may have a similar configuration, but instead of using a Toroidal power supply for the amplifier it uses a typical C-Core transformer.

This is not your receiver this is just the nature of HDMI handshaking duirng initial connect from a specific source.

When I was reading about the DTS-HD MA Bitstream Bomb over at AVS, I went into the 905 thread and was reading about the EU updates for the 905. One of the features in the update is that they were able to speed up the HDMI switching. While I hope this is true and will hopefully see it in a US update, I could be wrong.

Wouldn't the top be the best place for the 905 as that's where most of the 50+ degree heat can eminate from?

Well the strongest shelf is always the bottom shelf and I spoke to the Manufacturer and they also said that the bottom would be the best and there is enough breathing room for it to keep cool so there will be no heat issues:D

I have read reports of the onkyo receivers have a significant delay with audio when switching HDMI inputs. Those users ended up getting a Denon or Pioneer and no longer had this problem.

The audio switches just fine on my 905. The video is a little slow. But, as I mentioned above, Onkyo apparently has a fix for this.

I have a question regarding USB connectivity with higher end home theater receivers... If I plan to network my home PC (and home network) thru the receiver... do I have to buy a higher end receiver like this one that has either USB or ethernet connections???

My PC's video card is an nvidia with HDMI out... couldn't I just access my PC files...movies and audio using windows media player on the PC playing out thru a receiver via a HDMI connection???

BG3,

I too just got a new 905. I am also noticing many of the same things you describe above. I hear a significant improvement (over my old Sony STR-DB930) in sound quality. Especially bass response at relatively low volume levels (-25db). My PS3 sounds amazing through the 905. And the video is every bit as good as if i conected the HDMI directly to my Sony SXRD.

Hookup was easy for me also. Speakers were a snap. Although, I definitely would've liked to have seen 2 subwoofer pre-outs on this flagship receiver. Wouldn't you? Beyond that, HDMI from my PS3. and a couple of optical toslinks for my CD changer and Motorola (Comcast) cable box (which I'll expand on below) and I was done with the connections.

Originally I did hook up the Motorola HD cable box (DCT3416) to the 905 using component video/optical toslink. Audio was fine. Great even. But the upconverted video (1080p) didn't look as good on my 50" SXRD as HDMI straight to the Sony from the cable box. Image quality was not all that I had hoped for. HD broadcasts looked okay but definitely not as sharp as HDMI direct to the TV.
So, I tried HDMI from the cable box to the 905. Great audio, no video. I ended up just running the HDMI directly to the TV and outputting audio to the receiver via optical toslink. Kinda disapointed about this as one of the main reasons I targeted the 905 was for it's video processing capabilities. I will try this again in a few weeks and spend a little more time on it.

I have to say though, the Audyssey speaker calibration worked great. Absolutely worth the 15 mins. to do.

I have my 905 in a credenza style cabinet. I had to brace the center of the cabinet as It was starting to bow in the center with my Sony receiver in it (center - bottom). Even though the cabinet is supposed to be rated for 265lbs. Anyways, I removed the doors and am in the process of replacing the cloth and glass with a honeycomb mesh that will provide airflow through the cabinet so the 905 and PS3 don't overheat.

Did you ever resolve this HDMI issue?
Do you feel it was an problem with this particular Motorola box, or is this something that other 905 owners have had to deal with also?
Thanks.

Shell,

I have not as yet re-attempted to connect the Motorola HD cable box (DCT3416) to the 905. Actually, I was just thinking about it the other day.
Now that I've had my 905 for a couple of months I should give it another shot.

To be honest though, I suspect it is a handshaking issue with the MOT cable box.

If I'm feeling adventurous this week (last week, my employer announced they were closing the manufacturing facility I work at, throwing 215 people out in the street so that they can save $4 -$5 Million/yr. Isn't corporate greed great?) I'll try it again. Ah hell, I need to get at the back of the receiver anyways to get the S/N and register it so I can DL the latest DSP and Firmware.

Thanks for the response, glad to hear you think its a handshake issue. Good luck finding a fix and I hope the shutdown ends up being an opportunity to improve your lot in life, once all is said and done.
