I recently bought the new Onkyo C-S5vl CD player to go with my Onkyo TX-NR807 receiver. I wanted to get the best sound when using my CD player so I bought some monster optical cables. When I hooked them up and tried to play my CD player I got no sound. I went into the settings and programed the CD player to optical 2 and still no sound. However when I use the regular white and red audio cables I get sound.

I called technical support and we tried everything including a reset. My receiver and CD player are still under manufactures warranty but the closest service center is 85 miles away in Syracuse.

Do you think there is something wrong with my receiver? The cables are brand new and I have a hard time believing there is anything wrong with the cables. I was just hoping to maybe fix the problem without having to make the long drive.

When you said you went inside, do you mean inside the receiver itself and programmed it that way? I'm sure you do, just want to make sure.

You go into the settings on your remote and it brings up the settings on your tv. Then I found the CD category and made sure the CD player was assigned to optical 2. There are two optical inputs in the back of the receiver. One is listed for games and the other says CD2.

If you do that then you should get sound from the CD player using optical cables.

Just want to also make sure you took off any protective caps on the cable as well.

yeah I saw those when I purchased the cables and took them off before I used them. It looks like I will be making the drive to Syracuse to get it fixed.

Does the CD player have an OSD? Is there a output setting on this player that specifies either analog or bitstream? If so, select bitstream(of digital...whatever it's called).

If the player if either output is always on...then try another optical or coax input on the AVR.

How to you know the problem is with the receiver? In my view it is more likely to be the CD player.

Before sending the receiver in you need to connect something else to that receiver optical input.

Also, I have not used Monster cables for years. Their cables are not of good build quality and they would be the last cables I would use for lots of reasons.

The other issue is that all optical cables are very fragile. If you have a tight turn behind your receiver (common) you can destroy an optical cable in a hurry.

So before going to Syrcacuse, connect another device to the receiver on that input. If it does not work, get a different cable and handle it very gently. Fiber cables are made of glass. As you know glass is fragile.

I just purchased two more optical cables from monoprice.com. I am not sure if I can try my tuner or not into the receiver. I will have to check and see if it has a optical output.

Its funny you said try another device and hook it into the receiver's optical input. When I called Onkyo technical support the guy said for me to try that but I didn't want to start unhooking all my cables.

If I do have to drive to Syracuse I was going to bring my Onkyo receiver and cd player with the monster cable. I have never had a problem with monster cables. I have used them for years. But to each his own I guess!

I am not sure what you are talking about when you said does the CD player have an OSD? The model I have is an Onkyo C-S5VL

Life is good! I called Onkyo technical support one more time to see if I could get the problem fixed. Some times it takes a few different technicians before you get the one that fixes the problem.

The problem was the order of operations that I was doing when I played the CD player. There was nothing wrong with the amplifier. Before you load the CD and press play - you have to push the digital out button. I was loading the CD and pressing play - then pressing the digital out button. Its weird that something that simple could cause the player to not produce any sound.

I just wanted to say thanks to all the people that provided me good feedback on my topic. Now I can listen to CD's again with my optical cable!

I'd bet the CD player works the same as the receiver. You don't have to press the digital audio button each time. It should automatically be set to 'Auto' which gives preference to digital if both digital and analog connections are made.

You can press and hold the digital audio button for 2-3 seconds and it should show the setting. Normally it is set to Auto by default and is not necessary to change but maybe yours is set to Analog.

If it were set to Analog and it sounds like it is but you have no analog connections then you hear nothing.

Sure glad you fixed the problem and it was a real easy one at that.

I am not sure why I thought it was a Receiver problem. Any how later today I will check out the owners manual for the CD player and see if I can change the settings like you said. Thanks for your help!
