Onkyo TX-NR609: Connecting DVD player to Zone 2 Question

Hello AV experts,

I have an Onkyo TX-NR609 A/V receiver. I can't get my DVD player (Pioneer HTZ-424DVD) to work on zone 2. I am using RCA (Red and white) cables for my connection. (Line out of my receiver and line in over my DVD player.)

Just followed this manual: https://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/tx-nr609_manual_e.pdf

Take note, I didn't hook up the video output on my DVD player since I'll just use it as an "amplifier" for my speakers which are connected to it, so I don't need a display.

What I am trying to accomplish here, is to get the speakers connected to the dvd player to play the same audio on PC, GAME and CBL/SAT channels from the receiver using zone 2. Is this even possible with my receiver?

Another note: PC, GAME and CBL/SAT channels are all connected via HDMI cables.

To see the configurations and settings I did, kindly refer to the images below:

https://ibb.co/GJPPxv0 - PC, GAME and CBL/SAT back port connections

I hope you guys can assist me regarding this matter.

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Aaron Chichioco

Hello and welcome. Press the Zone 2 button on the remote control. Then press the power button. Zone 2 should light up on the front of the Onkyo. Then press Zone 2 again followed by the input button you want to be output in Zone 2. See if it outputs audio to the Pioneer setup.

Oh, and digital connections to the Onkyo will not be output from the Zone 2 pre out. You must make an analog audio connection for each device you want to hear in Zone 2. This is not an option with some newer devices that do not have any analog audio outputs.

If you are trying to play the dvd player thru the avr then you'll need to use an input on the receiver and an output on the dvd player (or is that what you meant?). Using analog connections should do it for zone 2, altho you may need to check input assigment as well.

I am using RCA (Red and white) cables for my connection. (Line out of my receiver and line in over my DVD player.)
ps never mind :)

It’s a combo system, built in DVD player in a Home Theater in a Box system. It has an analog audio input that he is trying to connect to the Zone 2 pre out of the Onkyo. It will only work with devices that are connected to the Onkyo with analog cables. He is using HDMI connections and needs to add analog cables to the devices that have them so sound can be sent from the Zone 2 pre out.

Ah, thought it was just a dvd player, didn't look it up....but shoulda picked up on the trying to use the dvd player as "amplifier". :)

ps zone 2 lineouts are confusing sometimes, too.

I keep thinking about using the Onkyo as a switcher box and thinks it’s wasted in that capacity. Not sure of the TV being used here, but if the TV has three HDMI inputs AND an analog audio output, the Onkyo could be taken out altogether and the devices could be connected directly to the TV. If the TV has only an optical audio output, an optical to analog converter could be used to convert the signal and plug the analog cables into the Pioneer. Information regarding the TV would help greatly.
