Hey

Was planning in buying a new Marantz SR6011, but then saw a used onkyo TX-NR5009 for a lower price. Gonna be using them for an 9.2 surround system for both music and movies. The Marantz one is 5 years younger, only 900 euro, has Atmos and van expand tot 11 with An external Amp. The Onkyo one is older and used, but was sold at 2800 euro and supposed to be an extremely good receiver.

Which one is best in your opinions?

I'd take into consideration that range of Onkyo avrs had issues with network/hdmi boards, and would wonder if the Onkyo has yet to be or already has been repaired under the extended warranty program.

You have limited time to take advantage of the program (and am not sure if they require original purchaser?). My 2011 Onkyo (different model) a few months ago finally developed the issue and it was repaired under the program very painlessly (fwiw I'm in the US).

Otherwise I'd also check if the Onkyo was one of the units that they omitted SubEQ from (and only had XT32, I know at least the 818 did and think there were a few other units they did the same with).

How much will the 6011 cost you?

Marantz would cost me 1000 euro (vs 750 for thé onkyo). I did read about some problems with the Onkyo, which is why I started doubting. It would be far much more superior, but is indeed used, a model with known problems and is not future proof (no 11.2 support, Atmos, etc). The HDMI problem wouldnt really bother me, it does not have subEQ.. only Audyssey Dynamic and multiRoom EQ (x32). I did however already deposit a small to reserve the auction. Should In try to get it back, or is the Onkyo still a valuable/safe option?

Or should I get totally different model altogether?

Greetings

New and warranty and more features for 250 more sounds reasonable to me. I am always cautious of used especially in an auction situation where you can't test the unit first....and doesn't seem you know the history as far as the board problems either.

The owner has let me known that the HDMI board has already been replaced by Onkyo by a better version that has not been reported to malfunction. He also stil has all the receipts. The model is circa 3+ years old.

+ I can do a soundcheck in his house if I want to.

That's much better then. I would definitely make sure it functioned and transporting it yourself rather than trusting packing skills and/or a package service....

Oh and fwiw in case you're not up on Audyssey, the only difference SubEQ makes is allowing for separate level/delay for a second sub; XT32 will still provide sub equalization....

I only have 1 sub atm so also not a big problem. I'm also new to the whole audiophile thing, so I will probably not even notice the difference.

Thanks for the advice/thinking with me!

Audiophile is more about the enthusiastic pursuit of hi-fi home audio reproduction, so you're already in the club :) With one sub, SubEQ in the Marantz isn't going to do anything different, and if you did add a second sub with the Onkyo you could set them equidistant from your listening position and still get good results. If you really want to get into multiple sub equalization with the Onkyo you can always add an external unit (like a miniDSP 2x4 for example)

Both are fairly similar and its a matter of choosing the feature set that works for you at a price you like with acceptable risk in terms of the warranty. Good luck on your choice!

I'd go with the marantz, better features, newer, and likely a better amp section.
