I'm looking to purchase a relatively inexpensive A/V receiver for my living room. Initially, I going to be running L/C/R speakers only, then probably get an inexpensive sub-woofer.

I'm going to purchase a network bridge and connect the receiver, DVD, etc. to obtain wireless internet.

My question is, would this be a good system "hub" to run everything through? I have never purchased and ONKYO receiver before, but my understand is that they are a good bang for the buck.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,

What is your budget for receiver and sub? Size of room?

Well, I am flexible but I'd like to spend between $200 - $400 for the receiver and obtain an 8" or 10" sub for less than $300.

I guess I'm looking for something that has enough connections (HDMI) and it network ready. I do not need 27 different sound options or similar.

After posting this, I did see that the TX-NR616 can be had for about $400, which may be an option.

I'd recomm. the 609 which has all the options you may need and more. The site is great and I bought my Onkyo(almost 2 yrs. ago) there and never had problems with it:
Onkyo TX-NR609 7.2-Channel 3-D Ready Network A/V Receiver | Accessories4less
and
A member here bought one and liked this sub. This sub may be an option. It's on sale: Amazon.com: Velodyne VX-11: Electronics
Another option:
I have a Outlaw M8 which I highly recomm. I live In a studio apt. and it's really enough bass for me for music and Home Theatre: M8 Powered Subwoofer
I'm sure other members have more sub options for you.:D

Thanks for the feedback. One thing that I noticed was how many different models they have, making it had to understand what's newer and/or better. The specs on a number of them are almost identical.

Here is another that I'm thinking of in the $400 ran

Amazon.com: Marantz NR1403 Slim Line AV Receiver: Televisions & Video

I like the slimline as it will fit better in my available space. It also has more than enough HDMI inputs (6). I do not need to crank out the music too loud so I think the 50 watts should be enough.

Thoughts?

I think the 6XX or 7XX series are better made. I have the 7XX series because I needed the Phono option, If not I would have gotten the 6XX series. The 609 is new model released last year. My model does not have the internet option, but I really don't need it. I use the port(609 too) If I need to play my MP3's and have the options of Pandora and other streaming music on my Sony Blu-ray and Roku. I not sure about Marantz. I have not heard them in a long time. I had a friend who had one In the 80's and sound quality was great and I'm sure they still do. I went for the Onkyo because of the features and the price was right at the time.

The Onkyo HT-RC360 is roughly the same as the 609 and is on sale for $280 with coupon code EMCNEJB232 and the much better TX-NR709 is on sale for $500 using coupon code EQK61003. Just note that they do run warm and need room all around them. If you stick them in a cabinet without 4-6" above them and good air flow you'll cook them. These are all last years models.

One thing I was thinking about, and correct me if I'm wrong.....

If I get a blue ray/dvd player with ethernet or wifi, I can use that to stream pandora and alike. Therefore, I do not need the receiver to have ethernet, correct?

Thanks,

You are correct sir. Just like hooking up a CD player to your receiver. You just need the WI-FI/Ethernet on your blu-ray player, Roku, Apple TV, etc. and you are set for streaming music via your reciever. They added the internet on the 600's and 700's last year, so that's why I don't have it. Either of the choices we've mentioned are still great options.

Thank you.

I'm still thinking of the Marantz for being so compact. The receivers now are so huge and I really don't need all that much power as well be sitting only 5-7 feet from the TV.

It is amazing how much technology is out there, but it does make it hard to know what's really needed and what's more of a fad.

I know the Marantz is a bit more expensive, but how is the quality?

I'm the same distance as you. I'm sure the marantz is a good buy. If you can try to go to a local store and check it out for yourself. Try to do some online research before you buy anything, which i'm sure you know. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
