Onkyo TX NR-906 Problem!

My Onkyo TXNR-906 stopped passing audio/video via HDMI. It started doing this after the unit was 6 months old. Three weeks ago, it stopped intermittently and I thought it was a bad HDMI cable. After replacing the HDMI cable, it appeared the problem was resolved.

Yesterday 12-2-09. It stopped again, and I was also unable to pass audio/video from my PS3 or Samsung 3600. I removed the unit and checked the cable box using the same cable and it worked fine. I called Onkyo, and my unit now sits at their repair facility in Cerritos, Ca. I am hoping they will be able to ID the issue. This is my main unit I depend on every day. Now, I am thinking of getting a back up unit, or replacement, perhaps the Yamaha RX-Z7.

Has anyone had the same experience with Onkyo receivers?
Any input or experience with the RX-Z7?
I am an Audioholic addict, I must have dependable unit.

i've never had such a problem with my 906, but I would suggest taking a look at your enlcosure, if you're using one. The unit generates a lot of heat, and maybe it is causing some component failures inside.

Thanks Nemo, I have a fair amount of ventilation in the console. I thought about the possible heat build up, and I have thought about adding a small fan to pull more heat off. I am still waiting on a call back from Onkyo service to find out their diagnosis?

This usually comes about because the socket gets damaged. The HDMI connector is a lousy design and you have to be very careful plugging things in and out. You must make sure there is no stress on the cables or you can get failure.

Thanks. I am still waiting for a diagnosis on the unit. It's been since 12-3-09, I keep getting the reply by the Onkyo service center that they are busy and haven't had time to look at my unit. Thank God I have a spare unit! I couldn't survive on the Samsung tv speakers.

I don't think Onkyo or their service center understands what happens when a true Audioholic is without their receiver!!!
