I am upgrading my home stereo system and want to use the digital inputs and optical output on my Onkyo TS-DX777. The documentation refers only to using the optical output for a mini-disc recorder or a DAT.

I have a DirecTV HD DVR (HR24) with a 5.1 optical output, and a Samsung BluRay player (BD-P3600) with a 7.1 optical output. The optical output from the Onkyo receiver is connected to a 2.1 Samsung sound bar with wireless subwoofer (HW-C451).

What does the optical output from the Onkyo carry: 5.1 DD or only stereo? Does the sound bar reproduce only the left, right and sub? Can I use the analog outputs on the Onkyo for the remaining 5.1 channels? I have wireless surround speakers, a Polk center speaker, and a pair of Bose SA500 speakers as well.

I'm looking for the setup that provides the best quality and flexibility. Thanks!

The optical out should output whatever was input. If it was DD 5.1 on the way in, it will be DD 5.1 on the way out.

I have never seen a receiver that will convert and incoming analog signal to digital and send it out its optical output and vice versa none will convert an incoming digital signal to analog and output it via any of its analog outs. So no, you will not be able to mix and match analog and digital outputs if the output of the receiver is being sent to a sound bar.
