Turn on the unit. Press the display button and while holding it down, press the power button once. Release the display button and then hit the tone button once. It will bring up the temp on the display and you can monitor it and see how high it goes.

Courtesy of "johnbe" at AVS. He says his tops out at 114 F. I have yet to try it, but definitely will this weekend.

Tried it with my 602. Only shown the software version number (V 1.09/09X06A).

Yeah, I also tried on my 805. Methinks that the provider of this information might have a 705. Thought it might be useful or interesting to someone. I guess not yet! lol

I think what might be useful is lowering the tempurature sensor rating so the fans will turn on to relieve the heat, basically reducing the heat threshold and allowing the amplifier to cool itself (TX-SR805 and up being the prime candidates for such an adjustment).

Tried it on my SR503 and it showed temp in degrees celsius and farenheit. :) showed software version when ya held display and hit power, then ya had to hit tone for it tone quickly to show temp.

As far as I know no manufacturer has ever published such a parameter. I have a monstrous 5803, and it has never gotten so hot that I could fry eggs on it. And I jam sometimes. :) :p I think at about 100' degrees I'd be getting concerned (for any receiver other than Onkyo :p), and at 110' I'd be outright worried for any piece of equipment. I'm not suggesting these are hard and fast numbers, or that I've ever taken a thermometer to my equipment. But at some point, the insulation on the capacitors (and perhaps everything else), and the solder joints and copper windings :p will melt. I've never had a problem with overheating equipment, but then, I always keep it well-ventilated, clean, and at about 65' room temperature. And I don't have one of those hot Onkyos.

I keep thinking i'd go for the 805 and then i read about the temp problem but getting a fan would i guess solve that? Then i read about a lip-sync and poping problems.

A fan could help, yes.

I don't think 100 degrees is very hot for a receiver. Consider your body temperature, the average is 98.6 degrees, plus or minus a degree. Any receiver will run as hot as 100 degrees when in use.;)

You're absolutely correct Seth. I don't think 100' "is very hot for a receiver" either. I don't know of anyone that proposed that though either. I do however, think 110' "is very hot for a receiver." :)

110 isn't that hot is it?

Well, I think that's very dependent on the system, load and environment. For my 5803, it absolutely is hot Seth. But as I wrote, my receiver is well ventilated and kept in a cool environment...about 65'. Always. I'm pretty sure if I let it play in an 80' or 90' environment, my 5803 would get much hotter than it currently ever has. I think 110' is pretty hot. Perhaps not for an Onkyo, but none of my receivers (or amps) have (or have had) ever gotten overly hot. But again, I have invariably played them in a cooler environment. An ambient temperature differential of 20' -25' is huge, and absolutely has an effect on the operating temperature of electronics. Cheers

I was just at CC and they had one on at idle. I wouldn't have been able to lay my hand on top for more then a minute, maybe not even.

One what? Onkyo? Just wondering because I've heard most of the new Onkyo's run hot.

All of these "scientific" reports are now making me want to get a thermal reading on my 5803. People's pain thresholds vary widely. I will post my 5803's operating temperature when I get around to finding a thermometer. My interest is now piqued. :)

Yes, the 805.

i have no doubt that the 805 has some cooling fans. I just found yesterday at a customers install me and my friend had out that the onkyo 705 has two fans on the bottom on the receiver.

I tried it on the 502 and it only shows the software version. However, if you hit tone while still holding down the display button it shows DSP Debug Mode.

Yeah. It may help in the future if those with problems of overheating state their ambient room temperature and the receiver temperature...at the very least. :)
