ok i just got a HT-S5100

i seem to be having issues with my sub tho. i am getting what i think is interference, some popping from the sub. i am fairly certain its not blown, i have barely used it and its done it since i got it.

iv tried to see if i can get it to do it at certain times. but its completely random. sometimes it will play a song just fine. ill play it again and it might start popping. its not frequent like all the time its more like a few secs of popping then it usually stops and start up 15-60 secs later. iv ran some lower frequencies through the sub to see if it did it at certain lvls. but some times it would be fine and others it would pop whenever.

iv tried the stock cable and just a generic audio cable from radio shack. that hasnt helped either.

also another thing iv noticed. i can plug the amp into the wall and its fine for days. soon as i connect it to my reciever is when it starts. and it wont stop if i disconnect it from the reciever. i have to unplug it from the wall.

so if anyone has any advice i would greatly appreciate it in advance.

I first will suggest you contact Onkyo Phone Support since they may already know of the issue and it's solution.

Good luck.

I also recently purchased a Onkyo Ht-S5100 system. I set it up and ran the auto set up and was actually impressed with the sound. After about twenty minutes the receiver started buzzing. Out of the receiver, not the speakers. I went through all of the normal things, such as unplug and wait and replug. Also reset the receiver. I then started unplugging speakers until there was nothing plugged and it still buzzed. Moved to another wall outlet and still buzzed.

I was not impressed with Onkyo service. I was simply told that since it was purchased from Circuit City, which is going out of business I would have to take to an authorized service center. I understand that and luckly there is one in my city. The problem is the turn around is a of minimum of 4 weeks. I asked Onkyo and they replied I could send it off, at my expense for shipping, and may get it back in 3 weeks. They basically said I shoud not have bought from Circuit City. This is brand new out of the box and will not work properly and they seemed to care less. I hope this issue as well as the previous sub issue don't spell bad system. Anyone have thoughts on this system, or experience with Onkyo service.

Buzzing? Is this coming from the speakers or the receiver itself?

it could be a ground loop issue. Try isolating the subwoofer on a different plug.

Wayne - I'd call them back and ask for a manager. It doesn't matter if Circuit City is going out of business, they still have to support their product, which was purchased validly under warranty.

ACPS - The subs that come with the Onkyo packages are garbage unfortunately. I wouldn't even think about trying to get it fixed, I'd just get a new sub. I installed one of their systems, which was surprisingly good for the price, but the glaring low point for the speakers was the sub without question - couldn't have cost more than $20 in materials to build it. I've seen better subs in computer speaker systems.

Thanks, I did ask to and was able to speak to a supervisor. They are going to uphold the warranty, it just seems odd that it will take a minimum of 4 weeks, and if I wanted to send off to get in in 3-4 week posibly, I would have to cover the cost of shipping. Hey, I do understand that new prpoducts sometimes have issues, but what bothers me is their lack of concern. I couldn't even get them to consider a 10% off voucher if I would go and buy a Onkyo 606, which is what I should have done in the first place. I will remain patient and get this new receiver repaired and see how it turns out. I am also looking for new equipment already as I am now hooked, but it will not likely be an Onkyo product.

Well HTIB's are built with pretty bad components IMO. If you want to just start over Onecall has a good deal on a Denon/Boston Acoustic set for 500 I think.

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52746 check out that thread. Those speakers are very inexpensive and apparently much better.FYI

The 3-4 weeks may be a high estimate to cover their bacon, but it's not unusual to pay for shipping.

Thanks, for the response. Its just nice to vent sometimes. I realize the HTIB is not the way to go. I was planning on building my own, but being that I am limited on knowledge at this point, I thought why not as a starter. I was planning on starting with the Onkyo 606 and build from there. Then I got this in the box at a steal. I will be patient and get this receiver repaired and lurk around her to aquire some knowledge and see where it leads. I must admit that for the few minutes it did work without the buzz after the auto set-up it sounded pretty good to me (with my limited experience). I would love to hear a good quality system.

I am at least running some quality wiring for the seven speaker set-up now to eliminate having to repeat later. The speaker wire that came with this set was awful.

3-4 weeks is normal. When one channel on my Marantz PM7000 died, they told me it could be up to 8 weeks for mine and I would have to pay shipping as well. Fortunately, I was able to just trade it in and get my current PM7200.

For wire make sure you don't buy Monster. It's got plastic in the middle which makes it a pain to deal with.

You can go to Home Depot or lowes and pick up 16 gauge for a reasonable price. You can also order from monoprice.com . But beware they tend to ship it very fast and it may arrive before you expect it too.:D I suggest 16 gauge for most runs. Unless you do a long in-wall run. Definitely limit yourself to 16 gauge for in room runs. it will be much easier to tuck and hide while giving you plenty of power room. For in wall I suggest 12 or 14 gauge depending on the length of the run. If you live in an area were rusting is common oxygen free my be the way to go, but if not then don't waste your money. It does nothing for sound.:D

I require you to read this before buying speaker wire

Some may be technical, but you will get the idea.
