I have an Onkyo tx-nr646 and a 7.1 speaker set up in the living room (my HT) and recently added a audio technica turntable to the mix for listening to my record collection. I have noticed that the Onkyo is trying to make the phono signal into surround sound and isn't the right presentation for listening to music, as I am sure you audiophiles will face palm due to that statement. Is there a setting that I am missing that will change the output to a 2.1 for music on phono and keep my 7.1 settings for when I switch back and forth? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Listenin Mode buttons, try music for stereo and movie for HT use. In manual you should find more detail about those buttons and at leats in my Marantz unit I can set those buttons myself for desired effect, should be the same with Onkyo I believe.

Unfortunately the Onkyo manual is severely lacking in plain english, so to speak. I saw some presets and it was late when I looked last night but it didn't appear to have an option for the phono input.
